Normally I would agree with you, but my description of the Cont is spot on. I played there several times more than a decade ago.
Obviously you were not there in 1980...It wasn't heavily gay at all - just art students/musicians. Days of emerging performance art/punk/new wave. I was there and it was a dive bar-yes, but the bands that played in the early eighties - a variety of great and bad. I remember Cindy Lauper tried to play there - but got booed off stage repeatedly til she gave up. It was a tough crowd -then. Upstairs was mostly Canadians - in 1980 they guys wore red bandanas/jeans and combat boots and the women wore black slips as dresses and lots of liner with vintage store stilettos. Strong strong 2for1 drinks 'til midnight in those awful plastic glasses made you think about how all those mirrors were broken and still hanging. In The patio out back anything could and did happen.

Farewell, Continental. So sorry to see you go. I always held out the hope that someone would buy you and fix you up, but it is not to be. Thanks for the memories and the good times!
