Someone in a previous post hit a note which needs to be picked up. There are several things which influence the success of students: administrators who know what is needed; teachers who truly know what and how to teach; students who can be motivated to learn; and parents who are concerned and care. The last two cannot be controlled or evaluated by teacher evaluations. Motivation can be done to some extent by teachers, but parents need to provide discipline and direction to their kids. Unfortunately many of today's parents do not know how or care enough to parent, partly because they are the kids of parents who did not know how to parent either. Perhaps we need to invest a small percentage of our educational funds on educating parents.
This is where I have my only problem with the new teacher evaluations, depending upon the weight given. Parental involvement is something well beyond the control of teachers and I don't want to see them shafted because of something they can't do anything about. Let them be evaluated on that which they have some control over. With the state of our ed sys in NM that may be a pretty tough nut to crack, but it can't remain as it is.

So, exactly what is wrong with evaluations of teachers. Every job in the private sector requires employee evaluations. Are teachers afraid they might not meet expectations? They should have been evaluated yearly.
Its not the evaluations themselves that are questionable, it's the criteria used and its importance(weight) within that evaluation structure.

Nowhere in my post did I say there was anything wrong with the evaluations of teachers. I pointed out that perhaps parents needed to be educated.

I think you are working with incorrect info. The teachers were evaluated each year and now they are evaluated four times a year. Every time I see a Teacher they look very, very tired. It is very rare that I meet an indifferent Teacher. Also I have never been afraid to ask anyone ? about my children`s progress or log on to the classroom websites to monitor progress and see if my kid is telling me stories . Anyone who has ever been caught off guard by an unfinished project the night before it`s due, would get hip to the class web site. Also no one can tell me that the kids from Los Alamos and the kids in Roswell are going to score the same on Math and Animal Husbandry equally .

Besides my own views on testing. The Ruidoso School web site has links to the state that explain what they are trying to do. The Ruidoso web site has what seems to be old info as compared to the state. The Ruidoso web site says they are working under NCLB But the State says they are working under a pilot program with waivers from NCLB so I guess Ruidoso needs to update their web page to make it more clear to laymen lie myself.

No disagreement there Hagar. I think parents are probably the one biggest factor in this whole pallet of issues. Many care and are involved in their kids education, sadly many could give two craps either way.
