The Little Bear Fire, ignited in the White Mountain Wilderness on June 4 by a lightning strike, was never fully contained, said Dave Warnack, district ranger for the Smokey Bear Ranger District.

It's astounding to me how people who have never been on a fire line have all the answers after the fact. Pearce is nothing more than a political opportunist. Fire behavior isn't found in a comic book, it's a science. Where does Swickard get his info? Another self appointed know it all. Put on the nomex and boots, boys, then make the call on the next fire and see how easy it is. Oh, and while you're at it, why don't you congressional people start funding the Forest Service properly? The Gingrich Contract On America in '94 cut funding initially and the anti Federal land management people have continued since.

You are exactly right Vern. This is why the previous Fire Chief for the Village of Ruidoso had a Masters Degree and two Under Graduate Degrees in "Fire Science" and 30 years of experience fighting large wildland fires. The new Fire Chief Harlan Vincent was never on the Little Bear Fire line because he has no Red Card, no large wildland fire experience and is not qualified to be out on the fire line. He just runs around in his pressed white shirt and acts like he has all the answers "after the fact". Just like the politicians.

Why was this type of report not prepared immediately after the start of the white fire? This is always normal protocol for fires that claim life and property. A post white fire report was never prepared simply because it would have exploited the incompetencies of the wanna be Fire Chief, and his efforts to cover up or obscure from view the involvement of his own relatives. A dual standard exists. Reports like this are prepared when politicians want answers. Reports like this are suppressed when politicians (Debbie Lee and Ray Alborn) want to hide the facts surrounding an individual that they have hand selected to become the next Fire Chief for the Village of Ruidoso. Vincent needs to get off the news and off the front page of the paper and stop discussing a fire that never burned within Village City Limits that he had no role in managing or supressing.

Just another example how "government" is NOT the answer. They do not do anything well or efficient. As a baseline of principles, government at the state or federal level has no business being landlords with few exceptions. Lawyers pocket most of the Forest Service budget, more $$$ won't help. A fundamental change in public priorities is the only answer...O.L.

Also heard that Chief Vincent actually refused to take the course for his red card to be trained in wildland fire fighting. Why the raise?
