Army Corps project aims to strengthen Lake O dike

Full story: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Bite by bite, a giant clam-shell-style scoop lowered by a crane chomps into the 30-foot-tall earthen mound that for seven decades has guarded South Florida against getting swamped by Lake Okeechobee .

Rest assured. The "Corps" will screw it up, and the price tag will double. They managed to destroy the Everglades with the greatest of ease after all. Oh, and let's not forget New Orleans. What a travesty.

First, The Corps offered various models for the New Orleans levee system and built a Cat 3 sysrem because that's all that could be afforded.
Second, the idiots in an area 13 feet below sea level stayed, with a huge and powerful storm approaching.
Then those same idiots EXPECTED others to risk their lives to save their sorry butts.
When help could finally reach them, they complained about the FREE food & clothing, looted what there was left then raped and robbed the volunteers that came to help.

Some businesses balked at moving to Glades communities because of dike concerns, and rehab plans should put that to rest, said Pahokee Mayor Wayne Whitaker, who toured the dike Thursday.

They should be more concerned about being robbed and shot by future NFL hall of famers!

The dike was begun in the 1930s and finished in the 1960s -- the portion being strengthen was among the later sections built.

Up to 80 feet means up to 40-45 feet into the ground beneath the 35-40' high dike.

The Lake Okeechobee dike weaknesses were reported in a 1969 USGS report and, more so, in the 1990s -- Hurricane Katrina had nothing to do it.

Not mentioned in the news report focused on what the Corps of Engineers is doing to bolster the dike around Lake Okeechobee is what one hopes will be one of the results: The lake will hold bigger supplies of water to serve surrounding cities instead of pouring/pumping surplus water from the lake into the ocean, killing fish on the way and feeding water restrictions. It will be a big relief to know that the lake will hold enough water to make wasting tons of it into the ocean.

Anyone who has been around for any length of time knows the Lake should be kept at 20 -25 ft, and that leaves a large margin of safety.

What it doesn't do is provide enough water for the ten million new residents planned for South Florida over the next ten years...

Better than all that, use all the lying BS that keeps coming out of Obama bin Lying's mouth. Use those "five million jobs from clean coal" Obama bin Lying promised last fall on the campaign trail.

Bush is gone, good riddance. In five months Obama bin Lying has out spend Bush by 10 to 1. Now everyone won't have long to wait for the Obama bin Lying taxes on everyone making $40,000.00 and up.
