Somebody is going to get hur bad with those 4-way stops, and the remark in the paper about drivers eating, talking on phone etc. is not always going to be the reason. 4-way stop signs are always a mess.

Why wait for a traffic light that is red if you are going to turn left ? Traffic is congested downtown and the four way stops are going to help with the problem ! I think the majority of the people complaining are not smart enough to know when it is there turn to go !

If you people are having trouble at the new four way stops, how do you navigate through the rest of town? They all work the same. You stop, then go. This town is full of four way stops, how do you navigate them? The only damn problem with them is that it is change. I never saw a town so full of doubting Thomas' in my life when something is changed. The four way stops work. Traffic is flowing better than ever. There were more rear end accidents at the lights than there have been with the "new way". If you don't know when to go, just sit tight, someone will eventually wave you through. Or, just stay on right 20 and sit at the lights. Also please do not embarrass yourself by traveling to other towns, they have four way stops also.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the traffic lights. They don't need repaired. It's about traffic movement through downtown, and it's a study being conducted by the State in cooperation with the City. Main Street is a State highway. Four-way stop sign intersections, depending on the number of vehicles that travel through the inersecion, result in more expedient vehicle movement than traffic lights, traffic engineers everywhere agree on that. If the numbnuts drivers of the world knew how to drive, not to mention were aware of the laws of the road, there'd be no problems with the four-way stop sign intersections.

I disagree that there would be no problems. The problem isn't when there is little traffic. It's when there is a lot of traffic. Those four way stops cause waaaaay more congestion during peak times.

What they need to do is implement a system and turning lanes. One that detects who is where and when. That in combination with a better light algorithm and you're golden. Heck, you could even make them blinking red lights at night and regular lights during the day. Lots of cites do this (As it is muuuuuch smarter. Why do you think they invented stop lights? They alleviate traffic - WHEN DONE CORRECTLY)

At one time, Buckhannon did have the lights run normally throughout the day and flashing at night. I think Mayor Davidson and council changed that back during his very first stint as mayor in the eighties. Wish he would make up his mind as to how he wants the lights!(j/k)......

It isn't like we have more traffic in our little town as the population of our 'burg' hasn't changed in 40 years, people are just more impatient.

The lights were safer before the recent change.

The flashing lights at off-peak times isn't a bad idea. But- how many of these same drivers who can't figure out how to navigate four-way stops, will go charging through the flashing red-lights? I think half of our population, especially younger drivers need to retake their dmv test. Red lights and stop signs both mean STOP.

It sounds like they need to turn out the Flashing lights and leave the signs. Some people can't figure out how to take turns at the signs.. It requires that you pay attention to who stopped first and sometimes extending a little courtesy when it's a draw and wave the other person on.

What is PEAK time? 15 mins in the evening and like an hour when the Slo-Mo checks come?

Don't like it take 20 and go around

They're not technically both 4 way stops. The stop by the city council building is really a 5 way stop coming down main street. If you pay attention, the vehicle wanting to make a left towards where the old mill used to be cannot be seen due to the vehicle to the right of them and further up blocking the view of the vehicle wishing to make a left. I'm waiting to see an accident in this FIVE way stop. I'm only hoping I won't be the one involved in the accident because of the vehicle in the turning lane blocking the cross road to the right from seeing me. Take a good look as you drive down main street and you will see this FIVE way stop. You will see the blind spot it is creating. Xmas will be fun, not to mention festival time and the rest of the summer.

I think the 4-ways are ok, problem is, the flashing lights above are throwing people off. I seen so many people that didn't even stop, the just coasted right through them. One person just went through it at normal speed and didn't even slow down and almost got hit. People are not even going on their turn....and They act like they've never stopped at a 4-way before. If they turn off the flashing lights, that would help. People are to busy concentrating on those than the actual stop signs. They see the flashing lights and take it as a caution and just slow down and coast through on chance.

yes flashing red lights on normal red yellow green lights means that the lights are broken and to use caution and follow normal rite of way protocol which would mean the people on main street would have the rite of way. The five way stop is very problematic. that particular intersection should not be an all way stop, someone is going to get hurt there and when they do I hope they sue the city. I would also like to add that people say its getting better, but from what I have observed many people are just trying to avoid these death traps.

I agree with you 100% If they feel they need these 4-way stops, why not the two center intersections? That one that's 5-way is a little scary.

I say the two middle intersections should be four ways and each end should be a real light ...if they have to have four ways at all.

You are supposed to take your foot off the brake when the light go off and step on the brakes when they turn red again.

So you will be pulsating the brake pedal when they flash.

What you do is play chicken with the cars trying to turn the other way. If you are aggressive enough you can take advantage of courteous drivers who will let you just plow on through the intersection.

So in summary, you watch the flashes and pump the brakes in sync with the lights in a sort or rhythmic action. Wait for the opportunity to punch it Chewy and go. God forbid if there are any pedestrians because that's a game changer.

Pedestrians will be considered collateral damage. Just make sure you got a good insurance policy and all your premiums are paid up.

End of driving lesson.

What they really need is a left turn lane coming from the 7-11 up to main street. That was the problem. People were getting stuck there because of people crossing the tracks coming straight across and not allowing people to turn left.

Now it's just a giant cluster of copulation.
