I hope everyone on here knows that EVERY computer being used has an IP address that will allow the authorities to track a computer. How do you think they catch child porn offenders? This site is ridiculous!!!

Get caught doing what? Last time I checked having an opinion wasn't illegal. And I find it EXTREMELY far fetched to compare it to child pornography!

Come on now "Realistically", you know exactly what I'm talking about. Its called "slander", which is a malicious, false statement, or report about someone. And I was not comparing it to child pornography, I said that the computers IP address is how they get caught. Also, from what I am reading on here, I would venture to say alot of people would agree with me that this site is a joke and should be closed. Here is an example...if I knew who you were, and I don't care to know, I could spread all kind of rumors about how you beat up your spouse(if you have one), cheat on your spouse, steal from your work place, I saw you here doing this, and that, and many other things just to damage your marriage, career or reputation. That is what I'm trying to get across. So yes, opinions are not illegal, but can be very damaging.

Opinions can be damaging, I agree. However, not everyone comes here to bash others and talk trash. Unfortunately, most do. It's sad, really. But, do we go as far as to take away freedom of speech? Personally, I believe that if you have an issue with someone, you need to take it up with that person. So I guess what I am saying is that I see where you are coming from, but don't necessarily agree with shutting down the site. Live and let live.

First of all....the person "slandered" has to get a lawyer. THe lawyer then applies for a court order (from the state)$$$$ which has to be sent to the parent company hosting the sight...i.e. "Topix"... which in not just indiguous to only Buckhannon, but is nationwide and deals with millions if not billions of posts. The written "typed" statement has to be searched, saved and verified BY THE HOST.$$$$$$ Then reviewed by the lawyer to see if slander has taken place.$$$$ If so, then it proceeds to trial via the essential paperwork lawyers do (back and forth) and regestered letters have to be issued to the PERSON OWNING THE COMPUTER FROM WHICH IT IS TYPED OR POSTED FROM. All these expensive procedures do not insure anybody of being "tracked". That would come from an investigation. Proof that someone was somewhere doing something without witnesses is exceptionally hard to do and an IP adress just tells what computer it is....not the person typing. Much harder than you think to catch someone who may or may not be lying.

ASKING for the post to be removed is much easier and less costly and will produce the same results in this small town - because once dirty laundry is "aired" around here, the smell lingers forever. Forget about it and move on it is much easier and less costly.

OH, I forgot about the IP address itself...once (if) "Topix" releses the IP address to the lawyer, they then have to contact the ISP and do the process all over again until they get the name of the account holder. Then the computer,,,, then the person(if they can find the correct one).....then the story...then the procedure for trial or settlement.

Yes and they would have to do a lot of work to catch everyone and can't just pick on one person or that would be harassment from law enforcement. They would have to bring charges against everyone on this site. Cause to just charge one 2 or 3 people that would be a personal Vandebta. And could be fought by a good lawyer from out of state don't hire a attorney around here they are law enforcements right hand men. So I'm saying right now I have freedom of speech and have soldiers in Iraq right now fighting for it. So it has to be proven and just because some IP address shows up. That takes a lot of work and proves nothing. Also Topix website will be held responsible. As well cause they are allowing it so u charge one u charge us all. That's to much work and something a officer wont probably deal with cause its a civil matter anyway. What they gonna do Sue us. Sue everyone? Bring everyone on this website in then see how long that takes. To get everyone in and out of court. Charges us all or don't charge us individual. That's harassment

Saying someone is cheating on their wife or slacking on the job or beats their wife is not illegal. Next time you’re at Wal-Mart take a look at the magazines they all say stuff like Brad Pitt cheating on Angelina with ex or Tom Cruz beating Katie. If they can do it and sell it I don’t think anyone on here has much to worry about.

It's funny how everyone on here always yells that hiding behind a screen name is freedom of speech! That is a perversion at best. Our fore fathers did not intend for you to hide when exercising this freedom. Most of them risked life and limb when they spoke out, no one on here usually has the guts to do that!

A screen name is also a right. A privacy right. Granted, I don't go around pointing fingers at everyone and their mothers on here. I believe that is immature and ridiculous. If I had a problem with someone, I would take it up with that person, and he or she would know exactly who I am. I do NOT, however, want every weirdo/creeper/lunatic on this website to know my real name.

You are an idiot. Every computer has it's own IP address assigned to it. Every business can have 2,5,20 or a hundred or more IP address assigned to it's network. Now, if you meant everyone sharing the same ISP you are still an idiot. They can use Suddenstink, Frontier, Fibernet, Micrologic...even dial up.
