Honestly, Mr. Leigh, I would like to meet Mr. Valdez and would've gone to his rally had he put a notice in the paper or somewhere that the public, other than his recently acquired FB friends, would have known about it AND not found out he wasn't even going to be there anyway.

Perhaps you and he have missed the point alot are trying to make. I have no idea who this man is, and most people simply know NOTHING about him other than 2 billboards, an article in the newspaper, and a brand new FB page with long, rambling quotes, pictures of medals & men with beards, & complaints about people on Topix questioning his background and motives in entering the campaign at the last minute. That shouldn't be taken as negative, but most people who take voting seriously (and I do) want to know something about a candidate before voting for them - not just this last minute hype with no time for anything to be verified, and he doesn't even show up for his own rally. Now that would make anyone question a person and their motives since he knows, as you apparently do, that lots of people want some answers to get to know him better.

If I were running for a very important office in a community I swear to love and care about, there is NO WAY I would have missed my own campaign rally, for any reason, so people could meet me, talk to me, shake my hand, ask me questions, put a current face to my name instead of old billboard images.

I have no idea what this man looks like, and yes, it's just nice to put a name with a face. If a friend staged the rally, I'd have asked to reschedule so I could be there. The public deserves to meet the candidate personally since he's obviously not well known and has been out of the community for quite a long time serving in the military, or so his bio says. Was there no time in the past 3 wks since he entered the race to plan a rally so he could actually be there? Can't you see that this raises even more questions?

Neither you nor Mr. Valdez should be taking people's questions as soley negative, but he tells his friends on FB to "choose wisely", and I agree 100% with that, but how could we choose him with so little information? Whether it was him or anyone else, I could never vote for someone that I know almost nothing about other than the last minute bits of info. tossed out there, and yes, I've asked around, and found only 1 person that I know that knows him, or knew him as a child, but admit they know nothing about him as an adult. People do know the other 2 candidates, they have lots of family and friends locally, and it's rather easy to check them out, but this guy, by his own statements, has been out of our area for the past many years, and now pops up to run for an office 3 wks. prior to the election, so people are curious.

Since Mr. Valdez acknowleges the craziness and anger raised by Taylor's mess in the Sheriff's race, surely he can understand voters being very hesitant and concerned with him jumping in the race at the last minute.

Is wanting more, verifiable information and a real opportunity to meet the man to ask questions and see who he really is asking too much of someone running for one of the most important offices in our county?

@ Upsher Voter. I can appreciate and understand your approach. Truthfully I wasnt going to post anything until I ready SunnyBucker's post. I just cant tolerate people perpetuating rumor or making slanderous comments. I have read some of Sunny's other post on other forums and he really does come across negative. All I was wanting to do is squash some of his statements.

I gave you a prop and I want to say I did not mean to do that. Actually I meant to hit reply. As for SunnyBuckers posts I think anything that he has posted is much better sounding for Upshur County then someone who says Buckhannon is a Ghetto. As for Mr. Valdez I just wish he would stop trying to turn Upshur County into a "police state". You do know what that is don't you? In his posts and his photos he sounds like someone who believes in martial law.

Mr. Leigh, I can understand and even admire your defense of a friend, but if you don't live here now as you indicated, perhaps you aren't aware of the incredible mess, controversy, anger, and downright disgust many feel after the primary election, specifically with the Sheriff's race, so people are probably hyper-sensitive on this issue.

True or not, fair or not, the immediate rumor on the street was that Valdez was a new candidate backed by folks who strongly and financially backed Taylor, and that the motive was to upset the election and scatter votes since Taylor wasn't on the ballot. The mess and hard feelings caused by Taylor's continued complaints and legal appeals have cost friendships, trust among friends and associates, a general frustration with the whole system, unfairly questioned the credibilty of our local govt., election process, and the local Republican committee, so Valdez' last minute entry unfortunately fueled those fires.

Since two other fairly well known local men decided to enter the race right after Kelley withdrew, obtained the required signatures, and began normal campaigning costing them substantial personal funds, then another person, unknown to most, jumps in without going thru the normal process, it raises questions.

You and he must be honest with yourselves in knowing that he has a million to one chance at winning as a write-in, so many ask "why"? I honestly don't feel either of the other candidates would win the race if they waited till 3 wks prior to enter as a write-in candidate. I suppose a write-in has actually won a serious election sometime somewhere, but let's face it - it ain't gonna happen in this race, so people question his motives. I also feel if Taylor had accepted defeat gracefully and waited till the next election giving voters a chance to get to know him better (before all his complaints and appeals of course), he might have had a decent chance then, and I feel the same for Valdez. Why the last minute rush to enter a race he must know he can't win as an unknown write-in? Do you see why people are so skeptical?

Anyway, I've rambled my last on this issue. We each have a chance to "choose wisely" as Mr. Valdez suggests, and I plan to do just that. My vote goes firmly to David Coffman because I know him, his family, his background and experience, and more importantly, what he stands for and hopes to bring to the Sheriff's office.

Re-read my statement. I didn't say that Paul thought it was ghetto. I said I thought it was ghetto. I'm allowed my opinion. Maybe someone like Paul could turn that around, so people who think like I do would want to live there.
If you are going to call someone a criminal then I suggest you come with real proof. Again Paul can not hold the position he had in the military with a criminal record.
So THE Gilbert Valdez of Buckhannon referenced in the InterMountain a couple years ago for the offenses cited, including contributing- is NOT your candidate? Is that your position? It's a very simple question- if your answer is NO, it's not him, I apologize for providing the link, recognize there are two or more Gilbert Valdezes in Buckhannon, and you'll not hear from me again. However, IF it is him, then you should disappear, and Mr. Valdez should immediately close up his facebook site, and end his campaign- how about that?

How about this- if the candidate is not the guy named in the charges- I'll go away forever, although the only thing I've been negative about is hoping for a better football coach for our kids. But, if he is the guy named in the charges- you go away forever, deal?

It may have intended to be him, but was not. As stated earlier Mr. Valdez had the Record Delta issue a retraction, but not the Intermountain. I asked him about the Intermountain and he didnt know about it posting the information. He can't be a criminal and hold a high level intelligence position. This type of would have ended his military career, so it was a serious event when printed. So even though it was printed in a paper, it does not mean that he committed a crime. He must undergo regular scrutiny for his security clearance. The Federal government looks into every nook and cranny of his life. Its called a multi-scope background investigation.

So earlier you stated that you wished this was done. Well it is for Mr. Valdez, but not released to the public.

The Record Delta prints what is given to them from the proper athorities on arrest and such. Now how would they mistakenly printed that if it weren't true? I'm sure that they wouldn't just retract something like that because the person of crime asked them to. How many Gilbert Valdez's are there? It had his address was that The Gilbert "Paul" Valdez's address? What do you mean by "Well it is (done) for Mr. Valdez"?

At the risk of being slammed for being negative, I did hear today that Valdez was part owner of a bar downtown around that time and may have been cited for serving alcohol to a minor which could be the underage consumption charge. That could be a mistake, could have been dismissed, and may have been a bartender working for him rather than him, but something to verify I guess. And yes, newspaper reporters are human and can make typos, so best to check it out first.

Well, I'm just going to say it (JGTSI). I seriously doubt (SD) everything that is claimed by Mr. "most interesting man in the world" (MMIMITW) Valdez. He is clearly a hero in his own mind (HIHOM), but I have a feeling that is the only place (OP).
I am oddly reminded (OR)of a woman named Brenda Greene who used to live here. In her mind (IHM), she was married to 007 himself. Unfortunately, her mind was...well...I'll try to be nice and just stop typing now (JSTN).

Weenie, as Larry the Cable Guy would say, "now that's some funny shit right there!" Nearly fell off my chair laughing, but some wouldn't get it unless they read some of Valdez' earlier posts here and on FB (below) with the same word/initials stuff.

Last night I was drawn into a discussion on the website TOPIX. After assessing the site I have arrived at these conclusions: TOPIX has been 'weaponized' and is being used as a tool for subversion. As such, I find this to be UNSAT (Unsatisfactory). I WILL NOT post on any other site than this Line of Communication (LOC).

Nice to see some humor here too! Still chuckling

Does Valdez not understand that he and Baxa are the ONLY two candidates that are running as independant, Coffman is a REPUBLICAN Candidate not an Independant nor running as an Independant. He keeps saying he is the only true independant Candidate. I feel he needs to do his research before printing this nonsense in the papers and online.

Also I challenge Valdez to show us that Upshur County is a HIDA (high Intensiety Drug Trafficing Area) county. To my knowlege Upshur County has NEVER been a HIDA county. This guy just says anything. Counties are the determination not roads as he stated in the record delta article. This is NOT true what he is saying. Have him produce the facts.

He just says anything, as for Mike Kelley supporting decriminalization of Marijuana this is the furthest thing from the truth.--SICK---

The drug bust in 2007 ask the Sheriff, what is he talking about???? No ONE person has ever taken down a working meth lab in Upshur County, especially not a citizen!!! Have him prove what he says. Was there an arrest made, or did he locate some items used in a lab, alog the road or something?? big difference!!

This guy needs his feet held to the fire, do not take his issues at face value. See proof I have listed a few of examples of LIES!!!!!!!!!!

If you saw Valdez' article (or whatever that was) in today's paper, you should also check out some of the disturbing things he's posted on his FB page (before they disappear).

1. Photo of a woman crouched by her bed pointing what looks like an AK-47 or something similar with a slogan "Poor Life Choices Damn, I knew I should have broke into that house across the street".

2. At one point, he had a picture of Sadam Hussein with some slogan about Osama Bin Laden (that disappeared quickly).

3. The most disturbing picture is what looks like a Muslim mother with black head scarf tieing explosives to a young boy's waist (presumably her son wearing a black ski mask) under his shirt with a caption "POTENTIAL - Not everyone gets to be an astronaut when they grow up. IF they grow up"

Don't see it now, but he had some photo album titled "Beard of all Beards" with pictures of men with beards, including Jesus? Duh Notice the many rambling posts and photos dealing with guns, guns, and more guns. We need a strong Sheriff that will protect us from drugs and violence, but this guy's stuff sounds scary.

The most infuriating are the lies he's posted and printed in the paper.

#1 - Boasts about taking down a meth lab here a few yrs. ago and handing over the evidence to the Sheriff's Dept.- did NOT happen. Check with the Sheriff's office yourself. In an earlier post, which he finally removed, he even referred to another law enforcement person as knowing about his big meth bust - another lie.

#2 - Stating he saw a campaign sign of Mike Kelley's suggesting the "Decriminalization of Marijuana". Absolutely crazy, and I hope Kelley sues him for slander. How dare he accuse Kelley of this nonsense?

What kind of SICKO posts pictures and lies like these, esp. one running for Sheriff of our county?

Why has this guy not posted his current photo anywhere, not even in the news article or his ad and doesn't even show up for his own campaign rally??? Something to hide perhaps?

Only good news is, there's no way he, or any other write-in candidate, is going to win this election. Blowing into town to run for Sheriff and taking credit for things he didn't do and lieing about local citizens, while asking me to vote for him, not a chance in hell.

Is it just me or does anyone else find this whole thing with Valdez truly disturbing?
