As a friend of Stephen's for 37 years, I will truly miss him. He would probably be surprised with these comments but his teaching ability was wonderful. His passion for the beauty of the guitar and music in general was inspiring to a hack musician like me. His porch parties and his love of his friends will be fondly remembered. Whoever mentioned he was the finest for 1000 miles certainly spoke the truth. I hope he is remembered as a man who gave his heart and soul to his students and unfortunatly struggled to survive in Paris. He deserved more. Please pray for his soul, his sweet Elizabethb but he is free now from his tormented past and I hope that he is with our friend, Dennis. Peace!

Well said Robb I was just thinking about a week before this happened. what me and my wife could do to show Stephen how much we appreciated him taking the time with our son Dallas. I asked Stephen if we needed to start paying for a hour class he said not now he would let me no. But so many times they were on the porch playing 1 hr. even 2 hrs sometimes. He told me that he wished he had 60 hrs aweek of Little D . Thank God we got to meet Stephen

Necrogurgitron wrote: You should call Stephen Grimstead. He's an excellent guitarist, and from what I've been told, an excellent teacher, too. If you want someone that's artistic, not a hick, and able to think outside the box, then Grimstead's your man. Great guitarist, but has a substance abuse problem that is apparent and gets in the way, sorry for this.

Concerned mom the man died whats with the insult. Did you KNOW him or did you pass judgement on the man. I was lucky enough to know the man. YES LUCKY. I was a student for awhile and a friend as well. I could search the rest of my life for man like him and will never find him. Some people didn't like Stephen. But I think it is closed mind ones. Thats cool. I loved the man. Planned to send my kid to him one day if he wanted to learn guitar. Now not exactly sure what to do about. I tried a few other teachers from here. They didn't give a shit about you. Take your money and teach you nothing. Sorry for rambling but that was uncalled for.

Two weeks prior to his death, Stephen Grimstead was arrested by City Police on charges of "disturbing" the peace.(wow) A neighbor called & complained about guitar playing on his porch. He had been playing acoustic guitar on the porch. The police came, pulled him off of his porch, and threw him onto the ground. At the jail, he was charged with felony possession of introduction of a firearm. Stephen had a handgun, licensed to carry, in his coat pocket.$10,000 fine, felony charge. He was roughed up by city officer Daryl Stahls. Stephen suffered from extreme stress from the impending charges. He died in his sleep less than 2 weeks after this police procedure. Please remember Stephen Grimstead in your prayers. He didn't deserve this! Pray to, for Concerned Mom, that she finds peace.

All I have to say is welcome to Paris. Stephen was one of the nicest people you could ever meet. I had known him for over 20 years. The cops around here seem to think they are above God or something.

I had the great pleasure of working with Stephen when I wrote for his "Turn Up That Noise!" column in the Memphis Flyer in the late 1990s. He was an excellent editor and a great colleague. I hadn't heard from him in years, and was trying reconnect when I came across this news. He was a good man, and it saddens me greatly to hear that he's gone.

Stephen was a class act. Paris didn't deserve to have someone of his character.

I too pray for Stephen's soul (If he actually had one) I am someone who knew him - used to think he was a talented genius ... Unfortunately - I, like the Paris P.D. met his wrath once and there was no one more violent than Stephen when he was drinking. Thank god he never assaulted a child that he taught guitar lessons too - that we know of. I'm kinda surprised he was teaching children after his arrest in 2003. All though he hurt me and my family in ways no one could ever understand, I never wished him harm or death - just peace. Which hopefully he has now.

Let the dead rest. This exchange is so sad and unable to fix the ills brought on by this man or anyone that has passed. Please give this sounding board a rest. If you must, pick on someone who can defend themselves...or Give PEACE a Chance!!!

Ajan, having made slanderous remarks about the dead, proves that you are, indeed, are a pathetic human being. Let it be.

I believe in letting the dead rest too and showing respect to those who have passed - but praising a man who has terrorized me and others will not wash with me - regardless of his state. Being talented does not help in the afterlife - how you treated others along the way does. You, sir are a poor judge of character. I really don't care what you think of me - but I would check out my friends a little more carefully if I were you.
