You can't get a disabled permit just for being overweight. Your doctor has to sign the application and you have to have one of several qualifying disabilities.

Disabled hangtags are free. Disabled license plates are $20.

I have one as well as a license plate because I'm actually disabled, not because I'm fat.

Your argument is an example of Affirming the Consequent, and is not valid.

I would say their argument is more a sign of their ignorance than anything else. It must be great to be the picture of health with a perfect BMI. congratulations.

No it is not a handicap, being fat is a choice.

04, Now I know this is not every instance, but do you feel thyroid problems that cause weight problems are a choice?

It's never (or very very rarely) a conscious choice, if it ever really is. Science is discovering more and more that genetics and metabolism play a bigger role in whether a given individual is fat than was ever thought before.

They also play a much larger role in how successful weight loss attempts are.

This is why some people can eat like horses and never gain an ounce, and others can eat like birds and never lose one.

Human obesity is much more complex than simply eating too much and not exercising enough.

You cannot gain weight through osmosis. There is only one way, I repeat one way you can gain weight, by ingesting more calories than youn you burn. Thyroid problems? Then you must reduce your intake.

Name one way to gain weight(fat) except throught the ingestion of food. We cannot produce our own calories no matter how slow our metabolism is.

It truly is as simple as putting down that biscuit.

Did I say it's possible to gain weight by not eating? Of course not. I said it's much more complex than the simple equation of too many calories/not enough exercise.

For some people 1000 calories a day is too much, regardless of how much they exercise. For other people 5000 calories isn't enough to maintain a healthy weight.

The issue at hand, though, is whether being fat is a handicap. In most cases, no it's not, and the person would benefit from parking as far away from the store as possible and walking.

But I imagine when you weigh over 500 lbs and are on oxygen, that would qualify. I don't begrudge those people the use of a cart one tiny little bit, even though they most likely got there from eating more calories than they could burn.

The real question to consider when discussing obesity is WHY do people eat more than they can use? That's another topic with many answers.

Weight is not a one-size-fits-all issue.
