I was in the Ingles tonight and saw an Amish couple -- not Mennonite, I know there's a community somewhere around. They were a young couple, the man had the black broad-brimmed hat, no buttons, black clothes, and the beard with no mustache, and his wife had on black clothes and a big old-fashioned bonnet. Mennonite women wear the little white caps, and this was an old coal scuttle bonnet.

Is there an Amish community around? They make the best furniture and stuff... I'd like to find out. Or maybe they're visiting Mennonite relatives...

No, these people were definitely Old Order Amish. No buttons, no zippers, looked like transplants from the middle 1800's.

I'm just curious -- I knew there were Mennonites around, but didn't know there were any Amish. I've always been fascinated with the religious communities, that's why I was curious.

My buddy from up north say's that Pennsyvania ,Ohio places such as those have large communities. He's from Wisconson and has always said the true Amish pretty well stay to their self. They could've been just traveler's. but as far as amish communities, i have never heard of any around West ,Ga .- Now , with that said, Bhudapest , past Waco had the Hungarians and their wineries , up until maybe prohibition ? Supposedly that's where Key's castle came from . btw, the only Amish i've ever talked to must've broke off or some how got close to west ,ga. I just simply let them tell me in conversation. Only way i found out .

About a year or so ago I saw an older Amish(not Mennonite) couple walking on 78. They had been shopping, they had Walmart bags.

There is a Mennonite colony in haralson county, they came down from Lancaster, PN year before last, they are more liberal than their northern neighbors. I approached one of them, he informed me that 5 families had went in together and bought the large tract of land they farm now, I
Made friends with him and thy made my children a blanket! The place where they farm is off the beaten path, tucked away privately. They wish to not be bothered. But to answer your question, yes they are here in our county, I have see the farm.
They are wonderful people! They just wish to live private lives.and they do come to town once or twice a year.

How neat. I think folks like that are just really special, and should be respected. They live their faith and show it in their every action.

That has my respect.

It's a shame they aren't a little more worldly, and sold some goods. The best preserves I ever had were from Lancaster, PA.

There has been an Amish family in town for the past few weeks. They are here for the services of the Bremen Health Clinic on Buchanan St.

These sort of religious communities historically kept out of the South first because of slavery and later because of the narrow-mindedness rightfully associated with the region but if the last couple of decades they have begun to trickle in. Yes, they are here in the general area in very small numbers but I don't know much about them other than one family does do some sort of home-based manufacturing business.

Sure they would. An "English" friend could have given them a lift, and where do you think they get fruits and vegetables they don't grow themselves? What about medications?

They're a strict religious group, not a crazed cult or hippie commune. They'll make use of modern stuff, but they won't own or operate the machinery that makes it.

True. There are various Quaker orders as well, some of whom avoid technology that compromises their way of life.
