As citizens of Swain County, we deserve better from our Law Enforcement. I urge you to find out what is really happening in this county. Find out how Curtis Cochran has caused multiple law suits due to his IGNORANCE!! Find out how Curtis Cochran and some of his men BEAT A HAND CUFFED man. Find out about the DARE fund and how Curtis Cochran used money from it to further his own agenda, then when he was called out he closed the account at UCB and opened another at First Citizens. Curtis Cochran is a CROOKED LOW LIFE COWARD that has no business holding any kind of office. Find Out SWAIN COUNTY!! See what your High Sheriff has been up to. See how much money he has cost the county. We deserve better than the Janitor!

What are you thinking? You cannot be serious! That’s all we need here in Swain County is DS is be our Sheriff. Experience and education are great; you have to have it, but there is more needed to actually run the sheriff department, how about a leadership skills, personal motivation and vision. The person who becomes the next Sheriff needs to be a well-rounded person. They need to have a personality and a desire to make Swain County a better place to live. We need a Sheriff that can make responsible decisions and hire responsible people. We need a sheriff that actually listens to the people in Swain County. We need one that is fair and balanced to all, one that is morally and ethically put together. There is a HUGE difference in working at the Sheriff Department and actually running the Sheriff Department. Let’s face it there are very few people in Swain County that has these qualifications.

There is no reason to stop at replacing the sheriff. I'd like to see the commissioners kicked to the curb after this property tax scam. Let's not forget the tax office while we're at it.
Maybe John Snow and Phil Haire too.

But people elect the same ones over and over and expect different results. That's the definition of futility.

I didn't say anything about who i thought should run for sheriff, all i said was that the ignorance at the sheriffs department needs to be stopped in 2010. Take a good long look at how much money Curtis Cochran has cost this county to date. The citizens of Swain Co do deserve someone who is fair and honest and balanced. Do we have that now? i dont thik so, i think what we have is a janitor that has a childhood dream of playing cowboys and indians. Has anybody questioned or know anything about the DARE fund and why he changed banks? Probably because he got caught writing checks out of the DARE acct and depositing them into his personal acct. This not hearsay, wayne dover went to the county and asked for the DARE fund records, because this is public information. He was not allowed to see it and the acct was changed to a new bank in a matter of days. For all the churches that donated money to this fund i would hope they would ask for some kind of record showing how there money was spent. What they will find is that the DARE program has not even been up and running the entire time he has been in office. The first year he was in office cherokee officers did the DARE program and last year the only contribution was a pizza party for the children. So what are your thoughts on that?

I know we are in trouble with our current Sheriff. The DARE program I was not aware of. Do you know this for the truth? That is horrible. How could he have such freedom with DARE money. There is a real problem with drugs in this county. We need the DARE program up and running. Swain County children need the education on what drugs can really do to you. Does anybody have an idea of how much money we are talking about? I know Sheriff Cochran is over is head in knowing how to run the Sheriff Dept.; but what you are saying is hard to imagine. It wasn't you that mentioned DS running for Sheriff it was "hear" I just know that would not be good for our county.

I think DS would make a great sheriff. I don't however think he is interested in the job. I've heard Tom Sutton, Jonny Ensley and Wayne Dover. Tom Sutton is to only one with experience...

I don’t know who Tom Sutton is. Is Mr. Sutton running on Democrat or Republican ticket? What is his experience and education? Wayne Dover worked at the Sheriff Dept befor; I think as a deputy. Johnny Ensley worked for the Sheriff Dept and Fl Dept of Corrections. I haven’t personally spoken to Mr. Dover but I have spoken to Mr. Ensley. Mr. Ensley said he has completed the NC BLET class and was also a Certified Correction Officer for a maximum security prison. I liked what Mr. Ensley had to say about the direction he would like to lead our county. Mr. Ensley has my vote.

I know for a fact that there has been thousands, somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-7 thousand worth of checks written to cash and deposited into mr. Cochrans acct. Remember at Christmas time the billboard that was posted below ingles that said "Merry Christmas from Curtis Cochran"? That was paid for with DARE money. this is just an example of the misuse of the money. I also know for a fact that there are copies of these checks floating around the sheriffs office. If you could get a certain person to share them.

how does going through NC BLET 15 years ago and never spending one day as an officer on the road give you what it takes to be the sheriff of Swain Co? JW because this is all Johnny Ensley has. We have already been thru an inexperienced man, why would we jump back into that again? As far as Wayne Dover, he also has only been a jailer and no NC BLET training. Tom Sutton is retired military, spent several years as a deputy out on the road and is now a probation officer. Not saying that he is the best canidate for the job but as far as the ones listed he has the most training and i think we all want someone with experience.

We need a leader with some good old common sense to start with. Our Sheriff needs to be fair and equal to all and have a good level head. Now let’s talk about people skills - Swain County Citizens need a Sheriff that they feel comfortable talking with. They also need to have management skills. The only fair way is to make this office strictly a professional hire with a person who can show training and certified qualifications as well as experience. Then make the job a position not a political office, in other words take it off the ballot and make it a recruitment and hiring move, drop the political nature of the postion. The person could have a limited or year to years contract with rehire based on a document of evaluation of gains and short commings. An unbiased apolitical proffesional law enforcement leader!!

I totally agree with that assesment - but we all know thats not gonna happen!! Its not done anywhere else in NC and I doubt it will ever be. I think ahoever runs needs to be a person that is qualified as well as a person with common sense. IDK what kind of Sheriff Mr. Lewis or Mr. Wiggins were but that is not the issue at this point. I would like to know how an investigation could be started against Mr. Cochran. I KNOW of some things he has done that are illegal and I think he needs to be investigated.

If "DS" is Mr Southards, he doesn't need to run for sheriff, he needs to stop being a doormat for his drunken, harassing, and psycho wife first, then consider trying to get his job back.
