Sheriff Cochran has stolen around 5 to 8 thousand dollars from the DARE fund in Bryson City. He was asked by the county officials to hand over records pertaining to this account but has refused. It makes me very sad to know that the high Sheriff of Swain County decided to supplement his income with money donated for a program to educate our kids about drugs. Its bad enough that he is suing the county because he thinks he don't make enough money (although he knew the pay when he filed to run for sheriff) but to flat out take money from our kids? Thats pretty low... remember his campaign slogan? "Where there is no vision, the people perish" I think his vision has been blinded by greed yet he continues to hide behind religion.

Hello Sadden,
My, my some much to say and yet not the courage to say your real name.. This is all just more BS over a "evil Repulican" Sheriff. Do you work for the County Commisioners?
We all know that having a republican in office in Swain County is the worst thing that could ever happen, thats why there has been so many attacks and never a true face to go with them.
I don't think the former Sheriff Ogle had this much going on.. Oh wait a minute I guess he would have had to come into work and actually do something first,, and also he is a Democrat ..Prove if you have it

Evidence? Some hick, who doesn't even know proper grammar, spouting out slanderous ACCUSATIONS, is not evidence. In fact, the only 'corruption' I see is how some idiot is even allowed to access a computer, let alone post ignorant ramblings such as these. Ignorant ramblings of someone who is probably just bitter about not getting some last night. Thanks for posting this, Saddened, for it has been quite entertaining to see how dumb a person can be. A piece of advice? Don't embarrass yourself anymore and spare the rest of us but throwing your computer out the window. NOW.

I have never heard such lies in my life. I guess when you get a TRUE CHRISTIAN in office and this sheriff is that, and a man who is straight across the board with everyone, not one political group or the other, this is what you can expect. This sheriff has done more to get drugs out of that county than anyone before. Maybe this is what is bothering some people. I agree with Mr Swain Politics, I think this person hit it right on the head!!! Keep doing a great job, Sheriff Cochran!!!!

Amused, I find it amusing how you can call people names and say that they shouldn't be allowed to use a computer for stating their opinion. Also, it's only slander if what you are saying is not true.
I have a piece of advice for you: wipe the egg off your face when it all comes out in the wash. The commissioners have asked him for the DARE records and he will not hand them over. His own staff knows that he has written checks made out to "cash" from the dare fund. He knows as soon as those records come to light it will be bad for him and his "Christian" reputation. Actions totally speak louder than words. I guess beating a hundcuffed man speaks to his Christian reputation as well. He is and always will be a janitor, not a law enforcement man. Amused, i feel for you and your bitterness. You obviously have have some deep seeded issues that go far beyond commenting on a forum.

Does anyone ever stop and think about what their time is wasted on? It looks to me that there are more people out there that try to run someones name in the ground with a bunch of lies than to actually see the oppertunity to take advantage and to support a good, honest, hard working, CHRISTIAN man that has done his job with pride, honesty, and without discrimination of political affiliation.
If there is one thing that I can say about Swain County Sheriff Curtis Cochran, he is not a theif. Neither is he a liar or a cheat. He is a man of his word. If he tells you that he is going to do something, that is exactly what he does. If he tells you what he stands for, guess what? That is exactly what he stands for. That is why I think that Sheriff Cochran is one of those "few and far between" people.
I think that we need more elected officials like that.

Saddened, I believe the bitterness it on your part. I see you are still mad that when he was the Maintenance Supervisor he did a wonderful job, as he is doing now. I would hate to be so embittered as you seem to be that I would revert to lying to try to make someone else look bad. The good thing is that the people of Swain county are a great bunch. Since Sheriff Cochran has lived here all of his life, the people know him and what he stands for. Thank God for the good people of Swain! Go Sheriff Cochran, keep up the great work!!!

Oh my, someone is getting worked up…ye of so many talents; NOT ONLY can you break these highly rated, award winning news reports (may we see your notes and documentations of these incidents, as well as eye witness testimonies? Maybe some video? Come on, indulge us!), but now you can also add psychoanalysis to your resume. My, without your help in bringing to light my ‘deep seeded’ issues, I might not have been able to make it another day. Tell me, what is your going rate and when can I get an appointment?

Also forgot to mention how totally unbiased you are in your 'factual' reporting. Snaps to you for being so ON it. You sure know your stuff, don't ya? And in case you aren't following, as it may be difficult for someone like you, I will spell it out for you...S-A-R-C-A-S-M.

I think all of this is silly. I am not sure what is going on. I do know ( I have heard from my job) that there is some investigation into the DARE fund. I also know FOR a FACT that he and some of his deputies beat an unarmed handcuffed criminal. I don't think that is right. I hope that nothing comes of this investigation into the DARE funds but I think people should be prepared if it does.

Like I said... it will all come out in the wash. Why wouldn't he give the commissioners the DARE account records? I would think if he has nothing to hide, he would hand them over.... I know FOR A FACT that he paid for his "Merry Christmas from Sheriff Cochran" sign with a check from the DARE fund. That is illegal... is it not?

BTW, I used to think he was a wonderful man as well. That is until he let this job go to his head. He beat a handcuffed man, he is suing the county bcause he doesn't think he is getting paid enough (although he knew what the pay was when he filed for the job) and there is a significant amount of money missing from the DARE account.... all these things point to the face that he is not the man he used to be. Can you blame that on ppl not likeing republicans?

Readers
I attend a lot of the Commissioners Meetings. I
have never heard the commissioners ask for any records on the Dare Program. Checking the Commissioner meetings minutes for the past 2 years, shows they have never asked for these records.
Sheriff Cochran is an honest man and has done a great job for Swain County.

Of course he is not the man he used to be. Do you want a regular Joe doing a Sheriff's job, or a SHERIFF doing a Sheriff's job? Shouldn't he let the job go to his head or would you rather he not care at all? Tell that to the all the people that have been helped since he took office. Look them in the eye and tell them you would rather that the Sheriff hadn't cared about them than have him let the job go to his head and heart and do the right thing. Let's be real people. He carries a lot of burden in the job he voluntarily signed up for. You keep saying 'he beat a handcuffed man'. Were you there? Or is this more hearsay? Was the man resisting arrest, trying to assault a law enforcement officer? Are you actually saying that you think it's okay for the people that put their lives on the line every single day for YOU and every one else to let a criminal, who escaped numerous times, resisted arrest and was dangerous enough to warrant a man hunt with all law enforcement available, assault the law enforcement officers? Is it okay that he is resisting arrest(and how do you think he was resisting? saying 'pretty please, don't handcuff me sir'-yeah right). Would you have liked him to have escaped again and ran down the road to commit more crimes, maybe worse crimes out of despair of not wanting to get caught again? Get off your high horse. At least the Sheriff and his men caught the guy. Where is the credit for that? What would you have done? Ran the other way? What about the injuries sustained by the law enforcement guys while trying to apprehend this criminal? Have you no sympathy for the people out defending you this very minute? What if you needed to call them up tomorrow, needing their help? Don't think for a second that their would be hesitation on their part, but would you deserve it? Would you be worthy after all the disrespect you have laid out here in cyberspace no less? No need to answer that as I am sure you think you could handle it all yourself. Why don't you strap on a badge, put your life on hold and go out there and run down some criminals? Let's see how well you do, sacrificing your life, family, and peace of mind, in order to serve your neighbors. Make all the accusations you want. But let me remind you, having an opinion is very different that having actual fact. And since this DARE fund rumor has only been made on this very forum, that in itself speaks volumes. Why have their been no reports in the local newspaper, no letter to the editors? If any of this were true, why would the commissioners just be sitting on it? If there were any inkling of truth, they would surely take it and run with it, especially due to everything else that is going on. You say they have requested records? I think if any of this is true, they could do more than request records. So, if you think it is true, why not question the commissioners for not being thorough enough to do something about it? Why not spread the blame out to all that would deserve it? I can tell you why. This is not about the fruity rumor you started about the DARE fund. This is merely a personal attack from someone who doesn't know fact from fiction. Thank GOD you are not out there in the Sheriff's shoes right now. Since you believe everything you hear, in your ear and in your head, there is no telling what the county's condition would be in if you were protecting it. We might all be standing around with bowls on our heads, waiting for the sky to fall. Watch out, Chicken little! The BS is flying all around.

To address the 'he's greedy-he knew what he was getting paid when he signed up'. You are entitled to your own opinion. You can think he does not deserve better compensation for the job duties he performs daily. You can accept that a man who puts his life on hold daily to attend to other's needs should be one of the lowest paid Sheriffs in NC. If you work, think about your hourly rate. Think about your job duties. Does it encompass 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Does it encompass putting yourself in harms way everytime you step out of your home. Do you have the worry of not only having your name out there for a target for criminals, but also the worry having your family's, your children's, your grandchildren's names there to? The list could go on and on of the daily burdens that are put on our Sheriff and his family. How can you put a price on that? How can you call someone greedy, who sacrafices much more than material things, every single day. Look past the money part of it. Couldn't it occur to you that it could be more about principal than anything else? Have your opinions. Keep them at that, though. You are NOT entitled to make accusations and state them as fact, when you don't have a leg to stand on. If you did, these so called 'facts' would not be posted in some forum online. It would be somewhere that actually matters. Have yet to see that...
