The information may be simply missing from the story but was there any arrangement for a psych eval of this man? I'm a mentally ill person myself - perhaps because of this I find forced treatment and or confinement a difficult issue, but its seems clear enough that on the surface at least he has a high potential to do harm to others. Given that I think we are justified in forcing this on him. Does the law not allow for this in such a case? And since I have your attention I'd like to say that every time a criminal is or is alleged to be mentally ill it gives the great majority of us who have never harmed anyone a bad name. But we rarely see anything be it news or TV show that shows anything but severe and dangerous mental illness. That's not a very complete picture. And I know many times the crook's claim of illness is bogus, which hurts those of us or are really ill even worse.
Being bipolar is different than being paranoid.
This man seems to be paranoid and delusional and hearing voices.

No, he's not an idiot. What he also is not, is another do-nothing, afraid of his own shadow cry-baby. When people learn that they can actually handle things themselves, instead of cowering in the corner, wimpering 'won't somebody help?', is when this country gets back on track.

Sometimes things that are reported sound far worse than what they really are. This 79 year old grandfather and great grandfather is one of the kindest most caring men I have known in my life. He needs help and a doctor’s care, but definitely does not deserve to be villainized and painted as a criminal.

Telling someone to drop a knife isn't quite the same as "disarming" them. Misleading headline.
Misleading all around this 79 year old man is my father law and one of the kindest and gentle men I know. He walks the neighborhood cutting clippings from bushes and trees in hopes to root and plant them and the knife he uses is a serrated kitchen knife. He may need help but he certainly is not a criminal.

Maybe not - but it takes more guts then most people have to confront an armed man.
Armed is one thing but a frail 79 year old grandfather carrying a serrated kitchen knife to cut clippings from trees and bushes is another matter altogether.

I heard he's had to register his arms as lethal weapons.

I've worked with disoriented patients/clients and can understand what you mean.

Maybe they need to look at his meds, if not onset of dementia. It could be an medication interaction or side effect.
