This is written to let others know of a bad experience that I had at Carl Gregory. A simple repair.......
From one additional repair to another, the cost continued to rise. Each of the repair suggestions seemed plausible and I started out with giving them the benefit of the doubt. The car was taken to them to have a new key tumbler installed, along with a new transponder/transceiver that I broke when attempting to repair it myself. I had already purchased the transponder/transceiver from the dealer for $160+ and figured I would be out of there with another $200-$300. I realize that dealers are much more expensive that the local mechanic, but I also needed an expert to repair this and I was willing to accept the slightly higher cost.
Within two days, I was in the $600 range, and that was not including the part for which I had already paid. I was informed that the key could still not be programmed and they did not know what to do at this point. The service advisor asked me if I wanted them to continue to try and solve the problem. Well, I needed my car repaired. I authorized them for one more hour of labor. I also asked why they could not call their training facility OR research what the problem is, as it certainly has happened before to a Chrysler vehicle. The service advisor stated that they “may have to do that.” Within another day or two, I was told that the vehicle needed a new computer. This was amazing to me. The computer worked fine when I took the car to the dealer. All I needed was a new tumbler and a new key programmed. I authorized the work and called Chrysler Corporate to explain the situation and see if they could cover these expenses in any way. Chrysler Corporate stated that there was nothing they could do.
When the new computer was installed, we were notified that the keys would still not work. Was the new computer even necessary? Obviously not. This was confirmed when a voicemail was left on my wife’s phone stating,“It is not the computer. It is the key.” We were told that new keys were being shipped to them and they expected the car to work once these arrived. However, they attempted to convince me that they computer was also part of the problem.
Within a few more days, I was called and told that my car was ready. Once again, I asked if the dealer could help by covering the cost of some, most or all of the cost. I believe the service advisor took of 10% before giving me the total of $1411. With no real options, I paid the cost and went to my car.
Preparing to leave, I started my car and found that my power steering did not work. I opened the hood and found the power steering reservoir to be empty. Again, when I took the car to the dealer, the power steering worked fine. Within about one hour, I was told that I had to have the “rack and pinion” replaced and that they would not be covering that cost since they had done no work under the car when they worked on the computer and key situation. They quoted me $900 additional in cost.
I refused. I had the car towed off of their lot and taken to my local mechanic in Kingsland. Within 48 hours, my mechanic called and told me that my car was ready and the power steering was just fine -- no cost. I asked my mechanic if he did any work on the car and he said he “cleaned it up a little” but everything was working fine.
Although I am suspicious that several of the repairs made were completely unnecessary, it is not anything I can prove. Carl Gregory Chrysler Jeep Dodge was given permission by me each time to do additional work on my car. My suspicions cannot be confirmed, as each repair had a plausible explanation.
However, the claim that I needed a new “rack and pinion” was completely wrong and would have cost me an additional $900!
I ask you to seriously consider your options before taking any vehicle to Carl Gregory Chrysler Jeep Dodge in Brunswick, Georgia.
