St. Simons Island is an amazing place that gets into your blood and leaves you feeling like it's been your home all your life! It has been a treasured island for my mother's family for several generations and my husband and I are current land owners ~ planning to retire there in a few years. I have had 3 children attend the University of Georgia and make the annual trek to SSI for GA/FLA weekend. They have cultivated countless memories of the island ~ the people, places. and beach ~ and, YES, even "Frat Beach" for the once a year party celebrating the upcoming game, their friends, university, sororities and fraternities, Halloween, freedom and life in general! I have been going to SSI during this amazing week for 8 years and have been a witness and participant to some degree of this incredible event...and it is an event! These kids are just doing what most older folks did when they were in their same place in life...enjoying friends, fellowship, making memories to last well into their twilight years! I salute and appreciate ALL the efforts of the volunteers, professionals, and residents for the assisted clean-up on Friday evening and Saturday morning...and for their continued protection of the beach, sea oats, dunes, and MAINLY of the visitors on the island...including on the beach on Friday. Without their commitment to safety and island pride it would not be possible to enjoy these memories and soak in the beauty God provided for all to remember! SSI and Brunswick has great revenue from this week and I am always grateful for the extreme hospitality of the employees of restaurants, bars, hotels, golf courses, taxi drivers, bike rentals, and vendors throughout the island. Frat Beach is 1 day, 1 area of the beach about 300 yards long, and 1 time a year to experience these memories! Most made good decisions, but for those who did not, I witnessed countless random men and women who assisted students AND older adults with their safety returning to their respective temporary homes. Thank you for continuing to allow these memories to be cultivated and treasured...just as the other 364 days a year always are! The graciousness, concern, and efforts of the islanders is another way to lead by example on hospitality, safety, commitment, legacy, responsibility, and respect for all to witness...especially our youth...they watched, listened, and will learn from all the positive efforts they saw during the entire week, and even on Frat Beach Friday! We all look forward to returning in 2014 for another beautiful week on an island ~ riding bikes, playing golf, walking the wide beach, and enjoying Southern Island Hospitality at its finest! St. Simons Island is a little slice of Heaven on earth, and its warmth in cherished and inhaled the minute one crosses the bridge!
