I'll tell you how it works in Europe, you go through customs & show your PASSPORT every time you cross a border. Hop Eurail, they check it before you get on the trains & again during your journey, if you've misplaced your PASSPORT, they stay with you & WAIT until you find your PASSPORT. Then, if you can't find your PASSPORT, they tell you you WILL NOT be allowed to cross the border into the next country until you find your PASSPORT. There are armed guards & policemen everywhere, at ALL border crossings. They don't shoot travelers & toss them in the river... they simply tell you, you ARE NOT allowed to cross the border if you can't provide your PASSPORT. It's not rocket science, jeb. European countries and ALL other countries have strict PASSPORT rules. See how easy it could be??
