Veterans United for Truth at War

Still Fighting
By John McReynolds
Thursday, April 3, 2008

More than a third of veterans returning from Iraq or Afghanistan suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), yet only a tiny number of veterans’ hospitals treat the problem. In 2005, the Veterans Administration acknowledged a backlog of 350,000 disability claims. It is now estimated to be almost 600,000. What possible impact could be made on a national scandal like that by a handful of aging Korea and Vietnam vets on the Central Coast?

Last summer, led by three salty old guys from Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, and San Luis Obispo, they filed suit. In January, they won their first victory.

“Our average age is 75,” guffawed Bob Handy, U.S. Navy (Ret.), of Santa Barbara.“We’re not afraid of the bastards. For a group of old farts like us to take on something like this is pretty unique. A lot of guys our age would be out vegetating.” Handy, 75, is chairman of the Santa Barbara-based Veterans United for Truth (VUFT). Sandy Cook of San Luis Obispo, 72, is vice chairman, and Russ Weed of Santa Maria, 75, is treasurer.

until you told us it's what you hear on the radio. Now hardly any of us rubes get knocked off our horses for facing the wrong way since you taught us how to ride side-saddle. But I feel selfish that we-uns have hogged you to ourselves for so long. I think it is time we helped you share your wisdom with the rest of the world.
Since you have such a great love for, and deep understanding of the Religion Of Peace, we ought to make you an emissary to the Muslim world. Heaven knows what they need most is a passionate gay rights activist to teach them about tolerance and an appreciation of a good ham on rye. So Steve, you just pick any Muslim country in the world and I bet it wouldn't take a week for us to raise the money to send you. I'm sure you would be welcomed with open arms.
XM Radio to Air Convention Coverage
By Bob Deans | Thursday, July 10, 2008, 03:41 PM

XM Satellite Radio, the subscription broadcast service with 170 channels, is jumping into the political convention coverage fray, promising news and interviews that “go far beyond the traditional media’s approach” to American politics.

XM reached deep inside the Beltway to name its campaign news channel - POTUS ‘08 - drawing on the White House acronym for President of the United States, or POTUS.

“POTUS ‘08 is the first and only radio channel dedicated to a presidential election 24 hours a day,” XM’s senior vice president for news, Kevin Straley, said in a press release announcing the network’s saturation coverage of the upcoming political conventions.

Democrats convene in Denver the last week of August; Republicans gather in St. Paul, Minn., the following week.

“While other media outlets are only carrying the primetime speeches, we will air everything that’s happening on the podium throughout the day,” said Straley.“And there will be no commercial interruptions.”

The Gas Watch

To save fuel, avoiding lefts is right on -- just ask UPS

Steven Cole Smith | Automotive Editor
July 11, 2008

Let's face it: There aren't that many brand-new ideas for saving gasoline. But Rod Mackenzie, XM Satellite Radio's vice president of advanced traffic and weather applications, studies this stuff for a living and offers up five tips that are, at least, well-conceived. His advice:

*Avoiding left turns, especially at intersections with stoplights, reduces the amount of time your engine spends at idle and reduces fuel consumption. Sound crazy? United Parcel Service saved 3 million gallons of fuel last year alone by implementing this practice.

*Use the latest traffic-avoidance technology, such as (we knew this was coming) XM's NavTraffic, which identifies traffic problems ahead of you and detours you around them. According to a recent study by the Texas Transportation Institute, one driver can waste $1,000 per year idling in congested areas.

*Use cruise control on flat roads when safe. This will improve fuel efficiency because your car will maintain a constant speed.

If you notice, the only reason steve is posting to this thread is to keep it and most of his others from going dormant and sliding to the bottom of the list where they belong. Pretty sad, I would say. It looks as if steves little wiener roast didnt have anybody show up. Guess nobody cares, or they realize that there is a nutjob that started and keeps this thread going.

B.B. King to host weekly show on XM satellite radio
Memphis Business Journal

B.B. King will host his own weekly radio show for XM Radio beginning in September.

In anticipation of the show, XM re-launched its "Bluesville" dedicated blues channel as "B.B. King's Bluesville" on XM 74.

King's show will feature a broad range of blues and gospel music hand-picked by King. He'll also share stories about the artists and other personal anecdotes from his epic career. King joins an expanding roster of music giants with XM channels, including Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan.

King's career has spanned 60 years and earned him awards from Grammys to the "Living Legend" medal from the Library of Congress. He hitchhiked to Memphis in 1947 to start his music career. His B.B. King's Blues Club is a Beale Street staple and his newest release, "One Kind Favor," is due to be released in September.

'Momsense' Mom Bringing Her Act to Town

Posted on: Thursday, 17 July 2008, 12:00 CDT
By Kayleen Reusser, The News-Sentinel, Fort Wayne, Ind.

Jul. 17--Anita Renfroe is happy she has an "Oh, her" factor.

"It means that when people hear my name, they look blank," Renfroe explains. "But when they discover I'm the one who sings 'The Momsense Song' on YouTube, they say,'Oh, her.'"

Renfroe, a Christian comedian, will perform at 6 p.m. Saturday at First Assembly of God Christian Center.

Before "The Momsense Song" hit cyberspace in May 2007, Renfroe was a pastor's wife from Atlanta who traveled throughout the South, speaking mostly to church women's groups. She became nearly an overnight sensation with her musical monologue, which puts every motherly adage used in a 24-hour period into a three-minute ditty she wrote and sang to the William Tell Overture.

Millions of people around the world watched her segment and responded with e-mails of appreciation.

An added bonus occurred when producers of ABC's "Good Morning America" called Renfroe, asking to use "The Momsense Song" on the show. Since then, she has appeared often on GMA. She has also appeared on "Dr.Phil," CBS' "The Early Show," Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends," XM Satellite Radio Network's "Oprah & Friends,""Inside Edition" and others.

Renfroe was born and raised in Texas, where she and her family watched "The Carol Burnett Show." Though Renfroe says she never dreamed of being a female comedian, Burnett was the perfect role model.
