Manufacturers express work force concerns at roundtable discussion

"Manufacturing in Jefferson and Lewis counties is picking up, company owners say, but a skilled, young work force will be needed to keep the industry afloat as the economy rebounds."

If they want skilled and educated employees, they will have to learn to pay for those skills. Other sectors get educated employees because they pay them well. Don't point to the fact that young people are entering service type jobs instead of manufacturing. Many have to enter retail, etc. because they lack ANY skills at all. Some of those sectors don't even require many skills. It is the same all over.........Mr. Purdy and those like him undoubtedly think that they themselves are worth a big salary but the skilled mechanic who fixes his car....the skilled carpenter who builds his house....the skilled plumber who unplugs his toilet....or the skilled electrician who fixes his shorts....aren't worth as much as he is. Mr. Purdy spent a lot of time preparing for his career. Preparation come in mnay forms. It can be attained with a college degree or it can be attained through many years of practical experience or OJT. The people I just mentioned spent a lot of time SOMEWHERE getting their skills. So be willing to pay them like it!

I agree with a lot of what you said and let me add to it. Mr Purty is also a big liar! He said no one is laid off. Well, tell that to the 20 plus people who are laid off this week in lowvile. He said the starting out pay is 13 to 14 dollars a hour. It is $11.00 a hour. If Climax would update it's operation then he might be closer to the truth. but, the biggest need they have is people in maintenance who can work on computer operated machines. But, they refuse to pay the people the going rate for that type of job. I can't believe he would sit there and lie like he did about no one being laid off. Does that mean these people should report to work this week.
