very good...this is true and also the demise to our heritage and future...we will never be more in the eyes of other races when we can't even have pride in who we are...davy crockett, jim bowie, and others like them are considered heroes but if your mexican and fighting at that time you were a crook...
...it gets worse once you leave Texas...so be ware that your own fear of speaking up for who you are makes it harder for those of us living outside of Texas...we are all still just a bunch of stupid MEXICANS and we are all here illegally as far as the rest of america is concerned....and you will always be asked...how long have you lived in this country.....regardless of education, income, status, or civic duty...
YOU SURE RIGHT ABOUT ALL THIS... PERO, AS LONG AS OUR RAZA KNOWS THE TRUTH AND HAVE THAT PRIDE WE WILL OVER COME ANY NEGATIVITY TOWARDS US. I BELIEVE ANY MEXICAN WHO SPEAKS HIS MIND AND IS HEARD IS A HERO IN MY BOOK.

Juan Cortinas original claim to fame was he murdered an Anglo Deputy Sheriff in the streets of Brownsville, the Deputy had been said to have mistreated a Mexican he had arrested. Of course this incident played well on the Mexican side of town, and Juan became a folk hero figure, defending the oppressed and weak.
The problem with Juan was he soon thereafter went on a rampage slaughtering raping and robbing people who were far removed from the streets of Brownsville and the Deputy. Cortines and his band of cuthroats and thugs were killing small time Anglo ranchers as far north as Pettus TX. I understand they hung a ten year old Anglo kid from the rafters of his fathers store, just to watch him jum and kick.
All sad but true.
really so that means our great generals are all scum for they to slaughtered entire tribes for the taking of their land. And it is also documented that our soldiers to killed children and much younger than 10 years old. So we shouldnt glorify Custer after he to was killed in retaliation for the slaughtering of innocent people!

The question written by Murphy Givens, and disguised as me asking the question is extremely misleading. While I did ask such a question, I never mentioned that Juan Cortina started those wars. In fact, I have concluded that his actions were simply reactionary considering the times. Viva Cortina!
I am an ancestor to Juan Cortina, the name has been changed to cortinas somehow, im not sure at what time. Im trying to trace the family tree.

George Bush, ordered American troops to Iraq and put them in harms way knowing full well that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction! As a result of his actions thousands of troops have been killed! He is responsible for their deaths and has their blood in his hands! He is responsible for many more deaths of Americans than Juan Cortinas!

Cortinas was a civil rights activist of the mid 1800's fighting against the invasion of Anglo settlers that were out right stealing the lands of Tejanos by murdering land owners and changing policies after the Texas-Mexico War. The Rangers were hired specifically to kill Tejano land owners, Frontier families living here for centuries, Indians, and people migrating from Mexico. If your skin was brown consider yourself a target by these murdering thugs. The Mexican American population has been marginalized for centuries from the mainstream and the reality created by the elite White class turned many of the latinos into criminals over many generations of oppression. Simply said Mexicanos do not have the same opportunity as our counter parts and the huge backlash we have suffered by immigration have made us a bigger target than the real threats to this nations national security with are people of a different religious affiliation. Just as African Americans had Malcolm X and Dr. King to gain civil rights no matter the cost, Mexican Americans need leaders and statesmen like Cortinas to protect our interests to break the stranglehold that White Republicans have in Texas from the gerrymandering efforts in the 90's or the racist policies in Arizona undermining Mexican Americans rights by legalizing racial profiling. They forget that the South Western states are predominately Mexican American and it will always be that way no matter what they do. It is my hope that Mexican Americans realize the power that we have and the elected officials should fear the sleeping giant when it finally wakes up.

Cortino was a murderer and a slimebag. All of those who are protesting about their abuse at the hands of whites, ask the Comanches or the tribes in California how it was to be near the Mexicans. It was not good. Mexico is one of the biggest in population, richest (in terms of natural resources) countries yet it is a crime-ridden, corrupt, filthy mess with some of the highest illiteracy rates in the world. Who do they blame? Whites.

No self respect.
