Originally named Bowman's Castle and the name was changed when the place became a museum in recent times.

There is no proof that Nemacolin was a chief and he left the area about 7 years before the Virginia Militia established Fort Burd next to this site in 1759. Nemacolin did not live there at that time. He probably never lived in that area. He was originally from the Cumberland MD area.

It was the habit of white folks to attach the name chief to any Indian with whom they became friends. and it still is.

Note a partial view of our old Jr. High School in the upper right of the Bowman's castle photo which of course was demolished years back. Wonder if any full views still exist of it. Also, did u know that the top of the walls surrounding the castle had/has broken glass imbedded in concrete as a security feature against attacks & that there is/was a underground tunnel extending from the bottom of the old fire station wall (now also gone) on Market St. into the basement of the castle & a 2nd tunnel extending from the castle (beneath Market St. approx. where the old West Penn power substation used to be) down to the Mon river wall & exiting at the river 's edge (to the right of the train station several hundred feet) which i believe was also a safety feature for escape if under attack. I believe those tunnels were also used as underground portals for escaping southern slaves who rested temporarily within the castle (basement?) on their way north to Canada. Can anyone add to, or clarify the above info.
