Year-old law hasn't made much of a dent in cell phoning while d...

Full story: Oroville Mercury-Register

Although the state law banning drivers from talking on their cell phones without a hands-free device has been in effect for one year, it seems the regulation is doing little to deter drivers from chatting while commuting.

Perhaps the law enforcement community needs to lead by example. EVERYday on my way to work, around 6:40am I am passed by a female Sheriff Officer who is chatting on her cell phone, not hands free. Someone told me that law enforcement is exempt from the law, but I don't know that for a fact. Also, I am going the speed limit when she passes me.. so I guess they are exempt from following the speed rules also. I think she is in a hurry to get back to the office for shift change..

I see about 1 in 5 drivers talking on their cell phones while driving. I've almost been hit several times because of this. If more citations were issued, it would definitely help generate more revenue for the cities and/or counties

Increase the fine to $500 for first time offenders.

2nd offense - Confined in closet with Nancy Pelosi for two weeks, or death -- whichever you prefer.

You could up the fines till the cows come home... got to have the troops pulling them over. Just not enough man power.

I would put the number higher than that. During my daily 15-mile commute, I take notice of how many oncoming drivers have a phone stuck to their ear.

I would say 3 in 5, some days it's 4 out of 5. It would be nice to see some enforcement.

Well I pay into this one, I put about 35miles a day on the road, going from lawn to lawn mowing, I count on the average 25=30 people everyday, cellphoning, the majority are women, then comes city-county personnel, law enforcement(which are not exempt) kids(young drivers) then men. I spent $125.00 on hands free device and accesories. I complained to the city of Oroville oneday after witnessing three city employees in a row driving and talking without hands free(code enforcement, building inspector, tree and parks supervisor), and the gal that took my call explained they(the city )incourage their employees to use their cellphones and have'nt passed any rules against it. The worst one though was a CHP patrolman at a signal light in offical car talking and not noticing he was at the greenlight!!!while everyone was driving past him in the opposite direction, and when he finnaly noticed the light was green but changing to yellow he sped off, still on his phone!!!!!!!!!! Don't these law enforcement have radios to talk on? Maybe he was getting orders on what to bring home for dinner

THis is all bs....While I won't disagree that driving while on a cell phone is bad business, there should not be laws against it. What should be done is enforcement of existing laws for those that cannot control their vehicle, period. If you can't mulitask, then you get a ticket. It's no different then eating, changing the radio station, or given my lady some love, it's all the same...

Control the vehicle or park it..

Peace out...

You really have no idea do you? In all fields of public service, there is sensitive information that needs to be relayed to dispatch and further units. You need a cell phone as an alternate means of communication because radios do fail.

Sounds like you're the one who is lame, and also the one who sounds like he has the education of a third grader... Didnt you read the part about sensitive information? Not once did the post mention anything about being obselete. If you are in the military I am sorry for anyone you have to serve with because you sir are a jack off!

http://cdf.ca.gov/pdf/media/cell_phone_faq.pd...

"Operators of an authorized emergency vehicle during the course of employment are
exempt as are those motorists operating a vehicle on private property."

They often use cell phones to relay "sensitive" information, as was previously posted. Anyone can buy a scanner and listen to public radio traffic, but eavesdropping on cellular calls is illegal.

Most scanners sold have the cellular frequencies locked out.

As for the military, sensitive traffic is carried on digital trunked radio systems with encryption.
