I also started searching the web after watching the Mega Movers program on Discovery.
After reading a lot of pro's and cons for what to do with the remains of this historic river boat it occoured to me that I dubt that any one single investor will be willing to risk financing the rebuild, even if the interrest from all over the world seems to be substacial.

Also I found papers that the HLM have been de-designated. The riverboat was designated as a National Historical Landmark in 1989, and de-designated in october 2009 after the request of Anne Haaker.

Bot the fact that it have once been designated has its value in itself...

But.. back to my thoughts... If the worldwide interrest is this large it should not be to big a project to collect the funds by creating a company where anyone could offer their piece of investment by obtaining a share (or several) in this company for rebuilding this riverboat.
From what I understand the town of St. Elmo is willing to install plumbing, electricity and water but want to have guaranties that the build will be completed, not only assembled but fully operational as a hotel or what ever...

I do understand that they want to get their $2 million investment back in the form of taxes and tourism...

Anyone want to buy any shares in this company?

It is of course

Not all of my text got posted for some reason...

But... It is of course needed to get the owner of the "boat" in its current form along with this plan, or to buy it from him... I may think he have gotten the local politicians a little anoyed at him so it might be best ig he was "only" a shareholder...

But... It sure is a nice idea but A LOT OF WORK!

Good luck to anyone who starts up the project again...

ST. ELMO — It’s a new year, and The President riverboat is coming to Effingham, but it won’t be ready for passengers anytime soon.

Two-thirds of the boat’s pieces have been moved to along north U.S. 45, 30 miles from its previous location in St. Elmo.

However, inclement weather has halted the move for now, but once the ground is solid, Effingham businessman David Campbell expects to move the remaining pieces of the boat near his Adworks office where it will be located until a permanent home can be found.

Campbell is in the process of finding a site for the 300-foot vessel after he was forced to move it from the property just southwest of Interstate 70 that is now for sale.

Campbell is currently working with city officials to see what locations are available for the boat and said they are receptive to the idea, despite what he says was a lack of interest from officials when he tried to bring the boat to his hometown five years ago. His biggest concern currently is financing.

“Until we get financing set, there’s not a whole lot we can do,” he said.“I’m working on it every day.”

Financing has to be in place before he can move forward with the project, Campbell said.

Financing has been a struggle for Campbell, who bought the riverboat more than five years ago with plans to dry-dock the 80-year-old boat and turn it into a hotel, restaurant and conference center.

Campbell first disassembled the boat and moved it from its St. Louis home to the city-owned property of Tower Lake in St. Elmo, which pledged more than $1 million toward the project. However, following an election in which a new mayor and aldermen were seated, tension grew and council members disagreed on whether to continue support of the project, spurring Campbell to pull the plug and move the boat to another St. Elmo property southwest of Interstate 70. The privately owned property was bought by St. Elmo residents who sought to keep the boat in St. Elmo and had invested in the project.

After severing ties with the city of St. Elmo, Campbell once again looked at Effingham as the final home of his dream project that has garnered national media attention, including Discovery Channel’s “Monster Moves.”

Even though the boat is being moved to Effingham, Campbell said investors, including those in St. Elmo, have remained loyal to the project, but more financing needs to be secured to see it to fruition.

As Campbell searches for a lifeline to keep the project afloat, he is hopeful the new year will bring the support he needs to resurrect the project.

“I hope it’s a good year,” he said.

Does anyone know if the 'nutcase' of a mover has ever had any work since? Personally I wouldn't let him move my dustbin (trash can) from the yard into the street. An absolute shame & tragedy that a piece of history should be smashed up like that.

Ens agradaria que es pogues finançar el projecte i veure fet realitat aquest hotel tan diferent i original. Després de tota la feina feta és una llàstima que s'estigui rovellant.

We would like a finantiation for the project if it's possible and see this hotel finished so different and original. After all the work done it's a pity to see it all rusted.

I have just seen this program for the first time in Australia a further 8 months down the track from the last viewing in July 2010. What a shame that this project was handled so poorly from the very beginning, the first thing I noticed was that the pieces weren't being marked as they were cut up. Would love to have seen such a magnificent vessel remain restored on the river.

TODAY ,OCT 9TH,2011 MY HUSBAND AND I RODE (MOTORCYCLE) FROM OUR HOME TO ST ELMOS, A DISTANCE OF 100 MILES ONE WAY TO FIND THE SS PRESIDENT. I TOO WATCHED THE "MEGA MOVERS" ABOUT A YEAR AGO. WE ASKED THE LOCAL COP~"WHERE'S THE BOAT"? HE SAID, "WE HAD IT MOVED OUT OF OUR TOWN, IT NOW "RUSTS" IN EFFINGHAM. WE RODE TO THE LOCATION THE COP DIRECTED US TO. IT WAS A SCRAP YARD! NO SIGN OF A 5 DECK BOAT. WE STOPPED AT THE LOCAL GAS STATION, AND EVEN THE LOCALS HAD NO IDEA THAT IT WAS MOVED THERE! GUESS IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE NOW~~IT'S BEEN "SCRAPPED".....

found this discussion after watching the repeat of "MONSTER MOVES" on you tube, and doing a search to see how the hotel tuned out.
what a great shame that the magnificent steam boat "PRESIDENT" ended up falling into the hands of the butcher who was tasked with moving it.
at no point in the programme did he seem to make any attempt to follow any kind of plan, simply cutting away and letting large sections crash against each other then dumping it all in a field.
and now it may have been scrapped?
sad end to this story, i cant help thinking the steamboat would have been better off left in one piece and sold to someone else

To all across the BIG CREEK-what was left of the boat has been SCRAPPEd! I spoke to the local LAW in St Elmo's and he didrected me to the scrarp yard that melted ,cut up and totally got rid of the remais of this Grand Ship. The Dream is gone. Really pisses me off. But homework should have been done beofre the start of this project.

They still air this 5 years later. And is melted. I know it the whole time, how can you disect something with a torch and weld it back together? It would have been scabbed to a million bucks in fresh metal, jeez, worst idea ever.
