Doug: A little selective aren't you? More deaths have occurred in the name of religion and doing God's work in this world than anything an atheist has done. Perhaps you're referring to the Soviet Union or China? Well, I hate to break it to you, but they did/do have a religion. They worship the State. All the pomp and services they put on are no different than most religious services, with all the same trappings. Perhaps you're referring to the Nazis? Again, they thought themselves very much religious, and good Christians, and doing the work of God. Having a leader base his/her judgment on reason, logic, and critical thinking than worrying about what would offend some spirit being would be a refreshing change of pace. Here endth the lesson.

Oh dear....sad, sad, sad standard to set. Mr. Edens, I bet you are good guy...and you may represent a majority view. But that is why a democratic republic offers us, at least, some measure of hope.
Hitler or Stalin, Hitler or Stalin...okay, so you're picking Hitler...oh really???
Do you think that if you were a Native American your perspective might be different? And I am going to go way out on a limb and guess that your ancestors were not force ably brought over here from Africa a couple hundred years ago.
The bottom line is that we get what we deserve (in the oval office) in this country. And that we elected the last two ("marginal faith") guys twice pretty much sums up the state of affairs here.

Obviously the letter writer, though well intentioned, hasn't opened many history books or read many newspapers. Perhaps he should start with reading about the Thirty Years War in which the Catholics and Protestants in Europe spent those thirty years killing each other in astounding numbers -- all this killing being done in the name of God -- no atheists there. To give an example from just a few years ago, the same two groups decided to express their religious beliefs in northern Ireland with more innocents being blown to smithereens in the religious process. Hasn't the letter writer noticed that there seems to be some disagreement between Christians and Muslims in different parts of world -- right now -- that has led to thousands loosing their lives? And what if the occupant of the Oval Office has a belief in a God different than the God the letter writer believes in? What then? The president should be the president of all the people, and should keep religious beliefs private.

True, but as far as THIS president is concerned, and was heard to scream to a few people, "it [the Constitution] is just a G.D. piece of paper!" He has made no secret of the fact that he thinks "jesus is his advisor" and no doubt thinks EVERYONE should "think" as he does.:::shuddering::: What a horrible idea. Ocean IMAGINARY gods have no jurisdiction

Tilly, you can't use what we have in the white house now to compare anything with unless it would be how these two escaped from the lunny bin someplace. It's just not possible to do something like that. These two are nothing more that a freak of nature. Heck god hasn't even figured out where he went wrong with the likes of Bush or Chaney. So next time at least find a couple of human beings to compare something to.

The death toll of atheist-based tyranny....when has there been atheist-based tyranny. From what I read in the history books, tyranny has always stemmed from religion, lest we forget the bold crusades by the Christians, forcing everyone to accept Christ at the opposite end of a sword. Perhaps you shouldn't stereotype an atheist administration as lacking moral fiber when religion and dogma have been the parents of most wars.

Who gives a damn what religion they are, as long as they can get the mess this country is in. We are one of the hated country on earth. Why is it because we think we are better than any else. The christan religion has caused more conflicts than any other religion. Look at the mess this current administration has got us in. I wonder if Bush goes to church and laughs at all of us Americans, at the lies he has told, and most of us believe him. Look at the latest Intellegence Report. His goonies have lied and look where we are at. As I said who gives a damn who is in office, as long as they can turn this country around. VOTE AMERICAN, NOT AS A REPUBLICAN OR DEMOCRAT, THIS IS THE ONLY WAY WE CAN TURN THIS COUNTRY AROUND.

Lets just look at WWII. Hitler and Emperor Hirohito said they were doing their respective god's work. Sixty-one million Allied deaths are attributed to fighting the Axis powers during the six years of war.

Kind of a catch-22. How are you going to know how an atheist President would run our country until you elect one? Those other "atheist" nations differed from us in many more other ways than the religious beliefs of their leader.
Besides, have you noticed that most of the nations we have been warring with have religious leaders?

Both the Nazis and the Communists in the twentyth century killed in the name of a "perfect society". Clearly, Lenin, Stalin and Mao drove godless ideologies. The Nazis were hostile to the churches and sought to revive a kind of Teutonic, mystical, racial paganism. All together, they killed on a scale greater than all previous history put together.
None of this excuses the crimes of men of faith. But, if you put your "faith" in secularism to save you from violence, your hope is in vain.

I would much prefer a humanitarian and dedicated leader in office, than any adherent to any religion, no matter how glibly they explain their personal faith. One's belief in an almighty should be a private and spiritual matter, not one for public display or discussion.
