"I'm hesitant to say it happens a lot, but unfortunately it does happen on occasion where we get a DWI with a child in the car. Sad, but true," said Sioux Falls Police Detective Sean Kooistra.

Welcome to the real world... "Sisseton,SD. It will make your jaw drop" That should be the sign along the interstate.... Maybe Sioux Falls Police should come up here and see it on a daily basis. The only thing is they don't "get" DWI's. It's called "Driving With Indians" riding bareback in the vehicle... it's the way of their people. When i taught my kids how to drive... the first lesson was, how to drive defensively. A must on HWY 10. How to swerve around obstacles in the road... and to always be prepared and cautious that the stumblers may step out into traffic. Then they SCREAM when one of their people get run over or hit at night. I remember a time when a white youth, was drinking underage in Sisseton and accidently ran over an indian passed out laying on a dark gravel road in the dark... Scared, they picked him up and transported him to the hospital... where he died. The young man was persecuted and RUN out of town. I wonder why people are hesitant to do the right thing anymore. your damned if you do, and damned if you don't.As I was teaching a child to drive one day... i actually had a very intoxicated indian JUMP out infront of the vehicle and fall on the high way infront of the car, as we braked and swerved to miss him. I called 911 and told them what happened because the individual did not get up. I was so mad that I said we didn't hit him but we should have. I was upset that this could have been a disaster had we been forced off the road on a steep ditch.. then we started adding up the deaths on Hwy 10 within a 15 mile radias of Sisseton.. from Browns Valley to Lake City.. Sisseton being mid point between the two. I believe it was close to 15 in the past 10 years... this is on a stretch of highway 28 miles long that mostly runs through the country.....except for the less than 12 mile that runs through the city of Sisseton. Those are ONLY counting the deaths on that road.. that are for the majority, alcohol related. It is staggering if you add into that the county numbers. This place is not the small town you want to raise kids in...

that should read less than "1/2 mile".. not 12 miles of Hwy, that runs through Sisseton. Typo...

Whats worse is the drunk farmers weaving down the road in thier tractors with the kids driving them home.
I called the police on drunk Indians several times and thier response was we don't want to waste taxpayers money on free room and board. Unfortunately the with the race card used at every juncture both ways how can these issues be responsibly handled. We made the mistake of giving a white homeless man a handout last year and had a heck of a time getting him to go away same with the white folks, my people helped them once and they've been here ever since it's just thier way. lol Like my daddy used to say show kindness to a white man he'll claim to be your friend forever. Don't feed them or you'll never hear the end of it.

Exactly why nothing gets done... you always have some ignorant soul that can only come back with pointing fingers as a solution. I was stating FACTS. I never have and never will, celebrate "Native American" day. I believe that was just a political jesture and I will teach my children like the rest of this country has, and pay my respects to Columbus on his day.

Your post from june 6 contained what solution? one solution you hint at is not living here maybe thats the key move? Someone staggers on the road so you blame all Indian and pay you respect to whom ever but don't disrespect a whole race because you swerved. I have saved many a drunk white persons but that doesn't mean they should all be arrested and done away with. You sound very angry and should seek counciling to help you through you issues. Anger mangement and defensive driving is key.

There is NO solution besides making people pay for their bad behavior that leads to breaking the law. You cannot change a mindset of people that "blame the white man" for their vices. Your alcoholism, your drug abuse, your incest... yes it is said to be CAUSED by the white man, or so you say. Well I say bull... stand on your own two feet... racial profiling has NOTHING to do with the numbers of arrests and convictions of crimes. Even the poorest of people that are NOT indian, have pulled them selves out of the trenches with a fraction of the help, and that of what is NOT given to them ... or handed to them.... Running away from the problem is NOT a solution... defensive driving WAS a solution to my problem at hand. Your tractor comment was hilarious. Farm machinery does not always travel well on the road,if you have ever driven some, you would know. Take note of the flashing lights and slow moving vehicle sins attached. No matter what the AGE of the driver...they are meant for the field. BUT they DO have to get from point A to point B in their quest to make a living, and provide you with your food. A bit different than stumbling down a highway.... some times a younger family member is driving this equipment BECAUSE families usually work together that way, in a "farmers life" Hence the reason for farm permits and the early age one can get a drivers license in this state. I am not LEAVING the place i have lived for many years and worked hard to pay for. I will continue to make aware, the situations that affect my life.. Your hand out comment is totally out of context. Again...reaching for something because you haven't got anything as a comeback. The truth be told. Don't blame a whole race?? Your race blames a whole race for everything...even though the fact of the matter is..none of you lived back in the day, and you carry on the hatred, and pass it on to your children. I say it's history. I say it evolved.I say that many a land was over come and taken for various reasons in the course of history. i say that those takings were not always right and not always pretty. All is fair in love and war. it's the way things were... we evolve as people and learn from the past and from mistakes. At least we should. If we don't we are over come with dysfunction. Do you live on the rez? do you live on an open reservation? Do you know and are you aware of the problems surrounding those aspects of Sisseton?? I don't believe so. Speak fact. Slinging mud just makes things even dirtier.

Very well put. Very insightful. I am sorry for your loss. I am aware of your situation, and I applaud you for telling it like it is. I wish others would see things the way you do. We need to role with the times and better ourselves for tomorrow, not live in the past and dwell on it. Take a stand young lady. We need more of you to change this around. Meth is an ENORMOUS problem in this area, as is many other drugs, the least expensive to make or acquire, being the worst. This is such a different place... People close their eyes and pretend it isn't this way. Now I hear about more horrific basebalL bat beatings this week and the possible discovery of a person that has been missing, found by VEBLEN, dismembered... THIS HAS GOT TO END!!!

See what I mean... your solution to all things pertaining to N.A, is give me, give me, give me. Pretty sure that if all your so called land was given back to you, you would be a victim of your own demise. Seriously. You have become a race that is so dependent on others, that you would destroy yourselves. Look at Pine Ridge. maybe that's what this place needs.. A buy out of peoples land.. Let the natives control it. Not support the native enterprise... casino's and such, and watch them destroy them selves. You don't get it do you? It's called progress... it is a fact of life. We evolve. You play the Indian card when you want something... but then again your WANTS are not native wants. You can't have it both ways.Real Americans????? Real Americans are those that work hard for what they have and appreciate the rights and freedoms that our daughters and sons fight so relentlessly, to protect for us. We are united. Not segregated into what we call a sovereign nation... having our own governments and rules that differ from the other AMERICANS. You choose to be separate. I think you should have to be over 50% Indian, to claim to be "Native"... other wise you should be whatever the race that dominates your ethnic background. Same with all races... that would put things in a tail spin now wouldn't it...
