These policies of not making physical contact with suspected shoplifters, whether Best Buy or any other retailer, is primarily to protect the employee. Having been in a similar situation, when I tried to restrain another employee from tackling a suspect and the suspect pulled a pair of scissors and started slashing wildly. It was only luck that no one was injured. These guys are lucky it was their jobs and not their lives.

Thats ridiculous. Too many precedents set by let winged Judges have given criminals a license to steal with no repercussions or consequences.

What has happened to our country?

This is more reason not to show at Worst Buy. The prices are inflated, customer service stinks and coprate attitude is below the sewage pool.
I do my shooping on line and will never ever set foot in Worst Buy.

Let the criminal go just because he has a weapon?
Isn't that kinda like negotiating with terrorist- albeit on a much smaller scale.
Tackle em- you might get hurt. If every single one gets away, wont they get more confident and do it again.

Very uncool BadBuy! They were not tackling a customer. Unless customer is now synonymous with shoplifter.

If the laws weren't such that they couldn't be suid for this type of action perhaps we would see less shoplifting and crimes. Hire two big bodybuilders for security all all doors and shoplifting solved.

Circuit City had the same problem - employees were ordered hands off. Even those caught and the police brought in were just slapped on the wrist and told not to come back. Retail stores have been attacked so often by rights groups and greedy attorneys that they've lost their balls.

Best Buy is not the only company to deal with employees in this manner. I know that they endangered their lives but it seems to me that a reprimand would have been enough here. Instead they just put two more people on the street looking for jobs. I just watched some NBC commentators screaming about how these guys deserved to be punished. Don't you think it's odd that even the Obama cheerleading network wants these guys to be pacifists? Read between the lines. Pretty soon no one will give a damn what anybody does and life as you knew it will be gone as well.

It's exactly this kind of attitude that allows crime to run rampant. Just roll over and let it happen and the insurance companies will sort out all the details.

If everyone could potentially fight back the thieves would have to think twice about committing the crime. I'm not suggesting that a tiny 55 year old woman should have to wrestle a 240lb linebacker, one would have to weigh the odds and pick their battles. But if I was in the same situation as these two and i thought I could take the guy I would have done the same thing. The point is firing them is a travesty and I hope it becomes a PR nightmare for Best Buy.

To Mr's Bergstreser and Trapp: sorry about the job loss, but in my eyes you did the best job you could and they are losing two obviously dedicated employees, something that's hard to come by these days.
