Everyone is calling Belichiks call a bad call. I don't think it is so clear cut as that. If his receiver catches the ball cleanly, the Pats win the game, and Belichiks a genius.
Patton already had two long drives for scores in two minutes or less. I think Bill showed a lot of respect for Patton. I can understand it.
I've listened to a lot of the chatter today, and, it seems, a lot of other fans, sportswriters, and broadcasters agree with you. Two yards just doesn't seem like much when you have Brady and all of the other weapons on the Pats' team.

However, I think you have to weigh the risk of not making the first down against the odds of Manning driving the Colts 70-80 yards in 2 minutes, without suffering a turnover. If you go for it on 4th and 2, you put all of your eggs in one basket. One play for all the marbles. If you make Manning drive the Colts the length of the field, you have 6-10 opportunities to force a mistake and win the game.

Ted Bruschi, the All-Pro LB for the Pats from '96-'08, has been saying all day long that the Pats should have punted, and trusted the defense. I agree.

Yeah, I know there were more, I just grabbed the MAJOR ones. Pats had some 'probables', but there again I just grabbed their MAJOR ones. Only matters is who DID play.
Well, that's what I'm saying. Four starters on defense were replaced. That's MAJOR. Name me one other NFL team that can replace 4 defensive starters and not suffer a SERIOUS drop off in play quality.

.
In hindsight, it was a bad call. If it worked, it would have been genius. I think at that point, the way the Colts were putting up points, Bill didn't trust his defense as much as he trusted his offense. IMO Would have been 70 yds for the Colts drive vs the 30 yds it became.
As I mentioned to another poster, I've listened to a lot of the chatter today. Some pro, some con.

I just can't believe it's better to put all of your hopes, and the game, on one play. If you make the first down, you leave Manning and the Colts very little time to reply. One play. If, however, you make him drive the field, you get 6-10 opportunities to force him into a mistake. You could still win, and it's much more manageable.
I think Pats (Maroney) turning the ball over in the end zone, giving the Colts the touchback instead of giving the Pats 6 points was the beginning of the end. JMO
It was a huge turnaround. The Colts did the same thing to Houston the week before. They forced a fumble on the 1 yard line that saved a TD and left the door open for a Colts comeback.

.
But using up their time outs way too early like the Pats did, THAT was their bad call. Tough come from behind loss for the Pats, but wasn't it a great battle?
I was surprised with the logistics of the game, as well. When is the last time the Pats were so rattled by an opponent that they blew through their timeouts like that?

Great game. We'll be seeing the rematch in January.

Colts were missing a lot more than just the two you mentioned:
Hayden - CB
Jackson - CB/S
Sanders - S
Hagler - LB
Gonzalez - WR
Hart - RB
Vinatieri - K
That's 4 defensive starters, and the #2 wide receiver. They were ALL replaced with rookies, except for Vinatieri.
Good game, bad coaching call at the end.
It was a bad weekend, all around, for any Boston team playing in Indy. Celtics lost 113-102 to the Pacers, who have now won 4 straight. Patriots lost 35-34 to the Colts, who have now won 9 straight.
Don't know what happened to Boston College, but it's a good thing they weren't playing in Indy...
Colts (out) Gonzalez, Hayden, Vinatieri, Hart (but couldn't find him listed), Jackson, Hagler, Sanders
.........(questionable) Francisco, Sorgi
.........(probable) Freeney (worked out)
.........(expected to play) Brown, Collie, Ugoh

Pats (out) Green, Morris, Tate, Taylor
.......(doubtful) Light
.......(questionable) Alexander, Baker, Banta-Cain, Brace, Edelman, Koppen, Meriweather, Sanders,
..........Warren
.......(probable) Brady, Springs, Watson

didn't mean to leave any out on either side

Yeah, I know, but kickers don't really count when you're talking about replacing players that affect the quality of play. Matt Stover is kicking for the Colts now and no one has even noticed Vinatieri is out.

Daily Horoscope for January 4

Pisces

Family, friends and in-laws are all hard to please. It is better to please yourself for once, dear Pisces, than to bang your head against a wall. You need to relax and get in touch with your own feelings. Do not hesitate to speak up for someone you care about. Someone may try to curtail your freedom. Set them straight and do not give in.
