I graduated in '57. The school was great and the neighborhood was still fairly civilized.

This is a photo of P.S. 74 which was in the middle of the block between Bushwick Ave. and Broadway. It has been replaced by the new P.S. 274, The Kosciusko School, which has been built on the same block.

My previously posted graduation date was mistaken. I graduated in 1953. When I was there, PS 68, next door, went from K to 5th grade and PS 74 was 6, 7, 8. Much later, the whole thing (over 100 yrs old) was thrown down and replaced by a new building called PS 274. Maybe Jayar can pinpoint exactly when this happened. In my day marching was not allowed in the PS 74 auditorium for fear of collapse. The principal of 68 was Dr. Ordan and of 74 was Dr. Max Fleisher. I had Mrs. Boyle in K, Mrs. Forman in 3rd grade, Mrs Mecklenberg in 4th, Mrs. Walters in 5th, Mrs Venner in 6th. Mr. Bergman was my 8th grade home room teacher and he was also the phys ed teacher and softball coach. I was on the school softball team in 8th grade. We won the district championship but were crushed in a no-hitter by a bed stuy team in the race for boro championship. Those were fuckin exciting days!

Daily Eagle article P.S. 74

http://eagle.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/Defaul...

P.S. 74 was built in 1896

P.S.274 was built between 1959 & 1961

P.S. 68 although I can't find an exact date it was built about 1900
