In case you do not know what this is about, adoptees and birth mothers in NY are fighting to have this bill passed so that adoptees can have access to their original birth certificates-a right that every other citizen takes for granted. Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein has been fighting us for years and has done it again, and we are tired of it!
The following message is from Joyce Bahr of the Unsealed Initiative. Re: A909 the Adoptee Bill of Rights, NY
The NY Adoptee Bill of Rights will not be voted on this sesson thanks to Helene
Weinstein who (once again) got her way:
__________
Because Weinstein was able to persuade some of our co-sponsors to go against us
Weprin was unable to move our bill to the floor. Weinstein orchestrated the
meeting of the Steering committee (leadership). I can tell you this is exactly
what Code Committee ( Joe lentol's ofc told us) they feared she would persuade
members to vote against us and say they wanted reform but they felt NY is not
ready for a retroactive law-so they would go for prospective. As u know we
already have prospective. Seems she doesn't know. Lorraine's assembly member
Fred Thiele was in the meeting for our side ( Weprin was not present, Weinstein
was) Gottfried led the meeting for our side. although a number of the 20 or so
members were for us we were not able to get the majority to side with us. Fred
said some of those who are listed as co-sponsors on A909 went against us.
Meaning Hooper Titus and Boyland.
the 3 of them either signed on or moved up to co-sponsor right before the
meeting. Weinstein's friends Nolan and Hevesi removed themselves from A909.
Fred did think it was good we made it to leadership for consideration and they
did not kill A909.

DNA! Helene Weinstein will be in for a surprise.

Thousands of Adoptees are doing DNA. So are parents.

Everyone do 23andMe, and the more that do it, the better.

Dear Helene Weinstein, I run a search and support group for adoptees and parents who are looking for each other. What you did was very sad. We have people who are being ripped off by Paid companies to search for their children and parents. Sometimes they still can't find. Sometimes they do. Some people are getting scammed and being told they are their family member when they aren't. Well good thing we now have DNA and people are finding who they are related to with DNA.So if you think you are protecting anyone, think again. DNA will discover who ever you are trying to protect.

Yes, thousands of people are doing DNA. Adoptees and all sorts of people. From that like at 23andme and FTDNA, people are finding their roots. No you don't need to start with a name to know what DNA results will reveal.
Remember my name, Joan Edelman. As I will be updating you on the reunions.

The opposition frames this as a "birthmother privacy" issue even though very few adoptions have someone concerned about being found.

Nearly half of all adoptions are step-parent adoptions. Those are also sealed under New York State law.

The vast majority of recent adoptions are "open" adoptions. Those are also sealed under New York State law.

We are seeing more adult children of long deceased adoptees. Those adoptions were sealed RETROACTIVELY in 1938.

Many adoptees have reunited with their families of origin - using DNA testing and non-identifying information. Those adoption records remain sealed even when all parties know each other and want the records unsealed.

New York State law applies to ALL adoptions - not just the few instances that opponents talk about. Why is the majority being held hostage to an archaic law? Why does Helene Weinstein not realize this?

To Helene Weinstein: Wow - I am amazed that you used your influence to block the A909 bill which would allow adult adoptees access to their original birth certificates. Consider my case: My dad passed in 1999 - as he was slipping into his final coma he tried to tell us his birth name - for 70 years he had held that secret because he was ashamed.

He was born in 1926 adopted at 14 months; he never wanted to reunite with his birth mother - but as he was dying, he wanted his children to know where they came from. We could only understand the first name my dad gave us because it was too late - he could not finish the surname before he went under.

If my dad's birth parents were alive now, they would be 107 and 116 respectively - who would be harmed by knowing the truth now?

My dad could not get a passport because of the difficulty finding his birth certificate. he adopted parents passed in the 1960s and no records were available. My dad never got to go to Israel like he always wanted to do.

I am sure you have your reasons for not wanting the truth to be available to the families of adoptees - but you represent the people of NY state, and not a small minority of people with something to hide.

When my dad was adopted, records were not sealed - why is it right to retroactively seal records that were never intended to be private. I know the date my dad was adopted and through which court, yet I am denied knowledge of the name he was given at birth, and thus my heritage.

This archaic need to keep secrets damages not only the adoptee, but their families for generations to come. Shame on you for supporting this caste system that relegates adoptees to being second-class citizens.

Dear Helene Weinstein,

I am a Arizona resident, yet I am a search angel for many adoptees and birth families from New York.

Please reconsider your decision with regard to A909 bill.

I retired from law enforcement after 25 years of dedicated service. I now volunteer my time as a search angel. I have seen the sheer joy and love evolve after reunification of birth families and children. Prior to reunification, adoptees and birth families never go a day without thinking and wondering.

Please reconsider!

How could a state who passed same sex marriage based on equal rights, not recognize the need for adult adoptees to also have equal rights, access to a copy of the original record of our birth? Helene Weinstein has done a cruel and abusive thing to the thousands of adult adoptees who are all waiting for NY State to finally, after 17 years, do the right thing. I feel violated, trampled.

Other states like RI, IL, ME, OR, KS, AK, AL, etc., have changed their laws to reflect and acknowledge present day rights and beliefs. The State of Oregon just passed a law this month granting adult adoptees access to ALL their adoption records. All we were asking for in NY State was to be afforded the same rights as all non-adopted citizens born anywhere in the USA, to be able to request, and receive a copy of our original birth certificate. This one simple document means so much to the thousands of us who want to know where we came from. We are no longer children, but grown adults who should have the same rights to our historical beginnings as everyone else.

What is wrong with Helene Weinstein and a few others? How can they trample on the rights of thousands? How can Governor Cuomo not react? This recent disgraceful act is so morally and ethically wrong, and there will be political consequences now, as this discriminatory action should transform into thousands of lost votes.

Meanwhile, thousands of us across the country and abroad are now turning to autosomal DNA testing (plus Y-DNA testing if male), to find our answers. We want to learn about "me". These tests give you ancestry and ethnicity information, and actual matches with relatives if they have also tested, and share enough common DNA with you to be detected by the test. One company even gives you health risk information as well. The information and autosomal matches will be from BOTH sides of your family tree. Our DNA tells us OUR story. Any secrets it contains cannot be locked away from us. The information is ours to have.

I now have over 2000 3rd, 4th and 5th-distant cousin matches having tested with all three DNA testing companies (23andMe, Family Tree DNA and Ancestry (dot) com). If anyone out there also tests with any of these three companies, who is more closely related to me (e.g., sibling, 1/2 sibling, parent, aunt, uncle, grandparent, 1st or 2nd cousin), they will also come up as a predicted close match. It is only a matter of time before a closer match pops up as more people continue to be tested.

I am also a volunteer search angel and I help educate adoptees and birth family about DNA testing. This recent last minute Weinstein-orchestrated blockage of our Adoptee Rights Bill from getting to the floor for a vote, has made me even more committed now, to spreading the word far and wide about the availability of DNA testing. NY State has proved to me that even in 2013, they still cannot do the right thing. We have already had adoptees receive close relative matches. DNA testing works, and works well. No more waiting.

I have now learned wonderful new details about my own ethnic mixture (Irish, Dutch and (paternal) Italian), and have started to be able to identify some of the surnames of my more distant family lines. All because of rapidly advancing DNA technology, help from compassionate genetic genealogists, and because of all those doing DNA testing by the thousands world-wide, who are doing their own genealogical research. My "cousin" matches are normally sympathetic when I tell them my story, and they try to help me identify our common shared ancestor as I am a hole in their own family tree too.

The 3 companies now offer these tests at prices the average consumer can afford, and this has greatly increased the number of customers purchasing DNA tests. Genetic genealogy will do for adult adoptees, what slow thinking non-progressive politicians in New York State failed to do. It will give us our beginnings.

Weinstein proclaims herself to be a "Feminist" which I find tough to believe. She opposes an adopted persons right to know our original identities; both male and female genders. She hides behind a veil of "Even this law violates even just one birthmother's right to privacy blah, blah, blah."

It is just my honest opinion, but I don't believe Weinstein *or* Senator Kemp Hannon one bit. Both of them are lawyers and both oppose our right to equality. New Yorker's must not forget the name of another lawyer who stole babies and sold on the black market for the highest bidder; Rabbi Seymour Fenichel. How can we be so certain that Weinstein and Hannon are not up to the same scheme?

I smell a rat, and it's coming from Albany, NY. Why else would Weinstein be going to such extremes to block our restored access to a simple sheet of paper that contains our born identities? She's neither an adoptee or a birth mother, so what does Weinstein stand to lose if we do gain our equality?

Is she protecting someone, or something? I suspect that she is, and in all likelihood it is no doubt financial gain!

Google who contributes to Assembly woman Helene-E-Weinstein. Its lawyer groups and the like. Just guessing but maybe she is afraid or the lawyer groups are afraid that if this bill passes (I pray it does), it will put some lawyers out of business. Maybe it all about the money. Ms Weinstein is very wrong and she will fail eventually. This bill will pass. I just hope in my lifetime.

I was born in New York city and am what they call a Late Discovery Adoptee. Meaning that I did not know about being adopted until adulthood. This discovery was actually made a year ago.

So basically, I was a walking time bomb in regards to genetic disorders. I was not given a chance to know or even embrace my own origin of ancestry and ethnicity. Now, forget the fact that my adoption was hidden from me. This is the reality for all adoptees at one point or another and for many this is a lifelong battle. You take that along with the not knowing of one's own beginnings. Can you imagine that this is the reality for many people in your own city and all across the world. Please open your mind and heart to our voices as other states have and as the nation will eventually have no other choice but to follow.

The idea of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness was meant for all Americans. The right to ones original birth certificate and self would bring happiness. The happiness that one would feel is only the tip of the iceberg. How do I know this you ask? Well, I am one of the lucky ones who have been the god given right of experiencing reunion. This was done by a grueling and often times failed process that has been set in place of closed doors and misguided information. That is why I say that I am lucky.

All of the biological family that I have connected with have been absolutely thrilled that I came along. This has brought about a sense of belonging for myself that has never been felt before. In knowing myself and those who are biologically connected. Also, knowing my medical family history has been very valuable. I have learned that diabetes is very common in my family and that, 2 of the brothers that I found had passed away from it in their early 30's. this has allowed me to curve my own chances of developing the disease by changing my diet and exercising more often. I also have another brother who is full blooded and does not know of his risks, since he is also a NY adoptee who I know for a fact is not able to have that information.

Please do the right thing here and open records in NY.

thank you,
Keith

Dear Mccrim,
Since you linked to this thread I will assume you are reading here. I want to warn you the person on your cd thread pretending to help you is a dangerous evil person who trolls that forum looking for vulnerable people to victimize. He will pretend to be a search expert but he's never solved a search he just scams people. He will start sending you direct messages, he'll get your private details from you, then your email and phone. As you reveal more to him, he will figure how best to play you and scam you. He'll pretend to be talking to "someone who knows the person you are searching for". Then as he reels you in, he will need money to proceed, and in the end the info will be bogus and your wallet will be lighter. He gets away with it because we can only moderate forum activity and he does his acts outside of the forum by getting you to talk to him privately.
Notice how the regular posters never respond to him, even though he follows them around and posts after them. Everyone is on to him and has read his rap sheet. Please keep safe and tell this predator nothing about yourself or your niece. He lied to you about getting sealed info from an adoption attorney's files. An attorney would be disbarred for that. The predator is playing you.

Hi, All people who are born and adopted in NY state registry should sign up with the NY state registry. If anyone who claims to be related to you, contacts you; you should directing them to NY state registry to sign up. THE state can confirm and notify both parties of the match.

We have search and support groups too, that can help you figure out if a person who contacts you is for real.

Don't hesitate to ask for help. www.nyadoptees.com
