You don't have to be adopted or connected to adoption. Just be someone who cares and is deeply offended that adopted persons in NYS are treated like second class citizens, without rights to their own personal information.

Dear Ms. Weinstein:
I understand that your stance on Open Records for Adult Adoptees is to protect the privacy of the Mothers who relinquished.
My Mother was a Baby Scoop Era Birth Mom who was forced to relinquish. I can state, knowingly, unequivocally and absolutely that my Mother and others like her were NOT promised lifetime anonymity. Quite the contrary, they were told they were dirty and undeserving. They were told their children would be better off without them. They were told to forget. They didn't forget. Every Mother of Loss I have met craves the child they lost. They would die, kill, sell their very soul for a chance to meet their children.
Adoption is a loss that is not resolved. The damage spans generations. My Mother suffered from depression. We were brought up in a world of paranoia and hyper protection.
Mom spent the end of 2012 and first half of 2013 in and out of the hospital. She was very ill. In the final hour, destiny stepped in. My brother came across one of my many online postings. We were able to set up a reunion while she was hospitalized. The moment she set eyes on him, she transformed from a sick, confused patient, to a beautiful, young mom aching to hold her baby boy. Her baby boy was 52 years old. The three days he spent visiting were the happiest I had ever seen her. This was not a woman who wanted anonymity. Sadly, this was her last hospitalization.
My brother was lucky in that his Adoptive Mother told him his Mother loved him, that she was forced to give him up. He had that, but still did not have his identity. Many are lied to. Many are told that they were abandoned, unwanted, orphaned, etc. No one benefits from a lifetime of deceit. The secrecy, deception, the deathbed reunions, or worse, the post deathbed reunions, all need to end NOW. You have an opportunity to right so many wrongs. I implore you, open these records. Give these grown-up citizens of the great State of New York their original identities, their people, their blood. Pass A909.

Thank you,

Joan F. Ollis
