My mother used to joke that I never left Bargain Town empty handed...I grew up at 51 Morgan Avenue and now I live in Vancouver BC. I lived on Commercial Drive in Vancouver for 7 1/2 years because it reminded me of Brooklyn! I miss the red and white striped building!!!

We lived on Hart St between Myrtle an Central.
I was born Nov 1948 and just before my 5th birthday we moved to Woodbine St right off the corner of Irving Ave. diagonally across from Bushwick H.S.(I, my brother and long before us, our parents attended Bushwick).
About 1957 or thereabouts my parents took me and my brother to Bargaintown to buy us our first bikes. It was nightime, after dinner, I'll never forget it. NEVER ! It was the most exciting short trip of my young life.
The bike was a 1 speed, coaster brake type and beautiful beyond words,(no multispeed hand brake type extravagant bikes in my family !) My father's salary was our only source of income and my parents, were VERY FRUGAL !
There was no K Mart or Walmart or any other Mart in those days. Bargaintown was the IT store. I can still see it in my mind as it was: crazy red and white striped building and very wonderful; creaky stairs and all.
In those days a man could take his wife and kids out at night and actually walk on Broadway and to the parked family car and not worry about getting robbed or killed. Amazing.

Bargaintown was great. I loved going as a kid. In fact, if I remember correctly, it had three floors, toys on three and had wooden staircases.
I wish there were more pics

About Joseph Bard

When Joe Bard arrived in America, he stayed with Rose and Michael Tenzer. The first day after his arrival, Rose took him to the public baths, a standard introduction to American life given to all new immigrants. The company became one of the largest in the country and employed many relatives. Some of these were: Teddy Tenzer, Sidney Herbst, Jack Tenzer, Milton and Doris Tenzer, and Oscar and George Bard.
