Principal Brown was my grandfather but I never met him. I would be interested to hear stories or descriptions of him (Good or bad).
I graduated from the 8th Grade at P.S. 9 in 1964.I remember Sidney L. Brown very clearly. My parents were friendly with some of the teachers, so we knew Mr. Brown slightly socially as well as in his role as principal. He was a warm, decent, kind man, genuinely interested in kids and education, and he fostered an admirably tolerant atmosphere in the school. Looking back, I see that there was a clear commitment to civil rights for all. It was an overwhelmingly majority-minority school, and many of the assembly programs were about issues in Black history, civil rights, tolerance, and improving race relations.

As Principal, he must have dealt with his share or disciplinary problems, but I never heard Mr. Brown utter a harsh word or publicly criticize a student. He was serious about education and academic achievement, and very proud, I seem to remember, at having been elected to Phi Beta Kappa in college.

Yes, the building still stands and is now a condominium apartment building.

I noticed a mistake I made. The principal at the lower grade school k-6th grade, was Mrs. Carole, not Mrs. Cavanaugh, Mrs. Cavanaugh, as I recall, was a fifth grade teacher).

Obviously, PS 9 was a school that was way ahead of its time, and meant a lot to all who attended class there.., I know it affected me and I won't ever forget the people, both students and teachers, I encountered there.
