Pope visits at a time of problems for U.S. church

When Pope Benedict XVI arrives for his first papal trip to America, he will face a Catholic community that has been portrayed as a sort of General Motors of churches, still the biggest but losing out to ...

The Teachings of Jesus Christ have not changed, and will never change. The Pope isn't here to choose up sides. There is no competition. People of faith who seek the grace of God will always be shown the truth. Some of the people who have no faith will never receive God's grace, and they will be lost. Still others like the 'good thief' on the cross next to Christ will, at the last minute, steal heaven. The Catholic Church remains the best method to seeking Our Lord, since it was Jesus Himself who began the Catholic Church over 2000 years ago. Satan, and his minions will continue to attack the church, but in the end it will prevail. That is a certainty.

A few years back when all the child abuse came to light Imus in the morning denounced it. He said "Don't tell me Rabbis are porking little Jew Boys"

It goes on in every phase of life, not just Catholics.

As an old altar boy I could serve mass for the Pope in Latin but as a Met fan I haven't set foot in Yankee Stadium since 1973.

I'll do my beads at home.

I'm not thrilled about the Pope having served in the Hitler Youth way back. My Dad was wounded twice by the Germans in Italy.

Let it go, right?

The Catholic church has taken Jesus' teachings and twisted them to fill political agendas throughout history. Even the bible itself was subject to different kings of different times changing authors and stories to fit their own version of 'piousness'.

No one can go wrong if they live by the Golden Rule. The church has taken upon itself to judge (Judge not or you shall be judged), murder (thou shall not kill); create idols through the cross, churches (physical), popes (kissing the ring), resoviors of gold (create no idol before me); and the church has created a false god (Satan).

Yes - people will always leave the church because Jesus taught us not to judge and to accept everyone. It is up to God to judge. Recovering catholics like myself have moved on and found God in more beautiful ways.

The Church is and always has been corrupt and misguided. The only way to find some sort of spiritual/religious enlightenment is by yourself. Unfortunately, most people like to be told what to do, how to do it, when to do it and why to do it. Hence, the success of the Catholic Church and organized religion in general. The leaders in organized religion have used this dependence to manipulate and control billions. They've used it to gain personal wealth, for unholy motives and to spread hate. Its happened throughout history. Wake up and see it. There is a special place for all of these "religious leaders" and it isn't in heaven.

This is hilarious. We're talking about a religion that teaches that if you miss church on Sunday without a valid reason, you've committed a mortal sin and will go to hell when you die unless you receive absolution by a priest.

Catholics may be well-aware of the doctrines concerning the virgin birth, the eucharist, and certain prayers, but they are woefully ignorant of the other teachings of the church. The problem is that people choose their religion based on how they "feel" instead of looking at what God says in the Bible and trying to conform their lives to that instead. It's not easy, but it's the truth. And life is in the word.(John 1:4)

Over 2000 years ago? It hasn't even been 2000 years since Jesus reached puberty! Typical Catholic ignorance...

Jesus taught us to accept everyone? Really? Show me where. What you may be thinking of is how he did not exclude people from the Kingdom of God prejudicially. When he walked among us, it was not time for him to judge the world. He came to save the world. He went to the poor, the weak, the disabled, the notorious sinners, the outcasts of society. But he called them TO REPENTANCE. You never see him associating with adulterers, prostitutes, and the like unless he is telling them to sin no more. And the next time we see him, his job WILL BE to judge.

Don't just cherry-pick the verses you like out of the Bible and ignore the rest. The Bible stands or falls on its authority which is either from God or it isn't. You can't have it both ways.

Organized religion is not the problem. Yahweh is a god of order, not chaos. The problem is that the Catholic and Protestant churches are not TRUE religion. If you stick with the Bible, you can't go wrong. Just be aware that the Catholics and Protestants have conveniently altered their Bible translations to misrepresent the Greek to better conform to their doctrines (or rather to the "least common denominator" doctrines that they all share historically, such as the trinity). I highly recommend either learning Greek or picking up a copy of the New World Translation. Even atheist university professors of Greek are now saying that the NWT is the most faithful to the Greek and least biased. Ironically, the Catholic NAB was ranked #2. No wonder the Vatican still refuses to approve it without major revision!

Felonious Monk, you have a lot to say without being correct. Catholism is not a true religion? What a sad, inaccurate statement. It appears the Catholic teachings offend or scare you, or maybe both. The Catholic religion is a marvelous avenue to Jesus and the Blessed Mother, and you should learn more about it before condemning it. If being in a cult makes you feel better, label it so. A true religion does not denegrate another religion, a cult does exactly that.

The Pope was forced into his service of the Hitlers youth. It isn't that he woke up one day and said this is a great thing let me join up.

When the church says it is a mortal sin to miss mass on a sunday, the church is trying to show the importance of keeping the sabbath holy. Something I am sure, ever you bible thumping religion holds. You may want to recall that it was the Catholic Church who decreed what should be in the Bible, what books make it up, and what books don't. We follow the religion established by Christ Himself. I'm sorry you don't.

That the members of the clergy were involved in the sex scandal is difficult enough. Let's not forget child sex abuse is still occurring everyday in the public schools. Just read the papers. The teachers unions seem to be doing a good job of covering it up. Lets get after the public school teachers unions in the same way the church has gotten after the priests.

"If you stick with the Bible, you can't go wrong."

Care to show us where in the bible it says that? Care to explain how & why "atheist university professors" should be held up as irreproachable models of exegesis?

You sound like either an embittered ex-Catholic with a chip on your shoulder, or a woefully ignorant wannabe-theologian

It seems Catholics want a bigger voice in the decision making in the church. If the "Mother Church" would consider allowing priests to marry and women ordained as priests, this could alleviate the shortage the church is feeling.
If congregations had a say in choosing a parish priest, they might also eliminate a sexual predator by searching his background and asking questions about his prior services in other dioceses.
You have people who are committed to the Catholic faith, but when they discover lies, deceit, scandal, and cover ups from leaders determined to protect the church, it is disheartening and people seek God elsewhere.
