I was wanting to hear opinions for or against this measure. I think that is needed, some of our streets are in bad need of repair.

I have not seen what area that they are proposing to annex? Does anyone have a link to where a map is? The city website just discussed the tax increase and how it would be appropriated.

I am against the proposed annexation. I live in the Farville Curve and our neighborhood on CR 705 is in the proposed annexation area. The city of Brookland has nothing to offer us in our opinion. To my knowledge, everyone in our neighborhood has signed a petition against this annexation and we are also against the sales tax increase. The city of Brookland did not contact any of us home owners prior to this for our opinions. The tiny map printed in the Jonesboro Sun did not make it clear who was included in the annexation proposal. Most of us learned about the proposed annexation after receiving a letter from Nancy Nelms, Craighead County Clerk.

Brookland has nothing to offer us but lower values on our homes and higher taxes if we are annexed. We currently are within a block of Jonesboro city limits and I would rather be annexed by Jonesboro if we had to choose between the two because it is more logical in regards to proximity, housing values and superior services that could be offered.

We currently have CWL water services, Suddenlink cable, phone and internet services from Jonesboro, and police protection from the Craighead County Sheriff's Department. Our garbage service is our choice and a majority of us already use Dedman's Sanitation, who also provides garbage service for Brookland. So what can Brookland offer us as a benefit of annexation? The only city service we lack is sewer service and Brookland said that they have no idea when the budget would allow them to offer it to us.

In my opinion, this annexation proposal is a land grab to add to their tax base to fill the city's coffers, without consideration for how little they would have to offer their new residents. I agree that the existing downtown city of Brookland needs improvement, but the annexation proposal will not benefit us, who they propose to annex. They want the new residents to pay for the needed improvements downtown without offering us anything in return. In addition, in this bad economy, I think it is unwise to propose a tax increase when most businesses and hard working people are struggling to survive.

If the sales tax increase does not pass, where are the funds to offer services to the new residents? Brookland already has a lot of dire issues they need to fix in regards to poor roads, drainage issues, and etc. so as to be more attractive to potential residents in future annexation proposals. They need to fix these existing issues in Brookland before they consider annexing more residents. This annex proposal is too large of an area for Brookland to annex when they have so many existing problems that need immediate attention. In my opinion and many others whom I have spoke with, the city cannot handle this additional strain on their budget and resources to provide services to accomodate all the new residents.

I know my neighbors and plenty of others are prepared to show our disapproval at the polls for both of these issues. Please go vote September 8th or consider early voting if you can't make it to the polls that day.

I live inside the Brookland city limits (albeit barely) and I am against the annexation and higher taxes. I believe the city is trying to do too much too fast as far as annexation. I agree with the above post - they need to take a look at existing problems within the city and get those straightened out before they consider annexing anyone. One of the reasons given by those in favor of annexation is that a higher population could attract more businesses. That is true to an extent, but businesses will be looking at more than just population. I believe the higher tax will cause more harm that good with regard to attracting new businesses. I will be voting against annexation and 9% tax.

Let's show some pride in our town, clean it up, repair our streets and sidewalks, make it look presentable, before we try to convince anyone to annex.

i'm not sure if my area 706 is part of the proposed annexation, i'm assuming it is and will vote AGAINST the annexation. I moved to the county so i wouldn't have to deal with city codes and building permits. It was voted against once b4 i hope it will be fail everytime.

I'd like to know where the money goes that brookland residents pay for water each month.
My water bill averages $60/ month, as do the neightbors on both sides of me. Part of this ($11 i think) goes for garbage pick up, but that still leaves about $40 for water. My parents water bill is about $9 a month. Guess I need to go to a city council meeting.

i don't think this will pass. it got voted down last november, why are they trying again already? and as for the water bill, yes it is high. mine also runs around $60 a month. the only reason we bought a house in brookland is that you could get more house for less money than jonesboro but with the higher utilities, it's really not any cheaper living out here. i could stand a higher house payment in jonesboro, the difference in utility bills every month would make up for it.

I love Brookland and evidently several other people do to. We do not have a high crime rate. I have lived her for 40 years and have never had a problem. Mayor Kenneth Jones is the first Mayor that we have had that gives a rip about this town. The annexation is only one of the many good ideas he has made decisions on. I plan to vote yes. This will give us the money to improve sidewalks and streets here in town. If you folks don't like the idea of the annexation move your ass to Jonesboro or Paragould where you can get two double shootings in one week.

Thank goodness we live in The United States of America where EVERYONE in the City of Brookland can vote (if they are a registered voter). I urge everyone to get out tomorrow and vote. No matter if you are FOR or AGAINST, you need to vote.

I attended the town meeting on the tax proposal and the annexation proposal. It was conducted very orderly and those for and against presented their thoughts and values very diplomatically.

Due to the fact that I am a citizen of Brookland, I want the best for my town; however, the people who live in the subdivision at Farville does not want to be annexed into our town or Jonesboro for that matter. Right now they can do pretty much what they want and they look out for each other. I was gonna vote for the annexation but after the meeting I am not sure. I think I would rather Jonesboro annex them in and by the looks of things that will not be too far off.

I understand now, after attending the meeting, why Brookland is wanting and needing to annex areas into the city limits. It is amazing what you can find out by looking back thru the town minutes of the buisness meetings and seeing what all things could have been done to help Brookland as a city.

Shoot, if I had of been mayor after last year, I would have not even tried again. I guess the mayor should just stop everything he is trying to do to help Brookland and set in his chair like the ones before him. NO, Mayor Jones, keep up the good work. IF the taxes and annexation does not pass, at least we know you and the current city council members are trying to help the City of Brookland.

If you are against the tax and annexation vote "NO" tomorrow. If you are for the tax and annexation then vote "YES" tomorrow. It is as simple as that.....YES OR NO!!!

I pray that the vote goes the way that the Lord has planned not the way we want it to go.

Oh, and if you don't like living in Brookland ... then please by all means...MOVE!!!!

or if some brookland folks don't like the idea of annexation, rather than "moving their asses to paragould or jonesboro" because they have a different opinion than yours and the mayors, they could just vote no.

Why should we have to move? We moved out in the country years ago and never asked to be annexed by Brookland. Let Brookland take care of their problems fixing what needs to be done, but don't ask my tax dollars to pay for it when I did not ask to be annexed into Brookland.

To my knowledge, only the people living in the affected annex area get to vote on the annexation issue. Citizens that are already a part of Brookland do not get to vote yes or no on the annexation as it does not affect them directly.
