Imagine the joy the men of the 4th Marines experianced as they passed under the Golden Gate Bridge aboard the troop ship USS Pueblo. They had spent the last three and a half years in a nightmare. Many of the men that had marched through the streets of Shanghai years earilier with Soochow in the lead would never come home. Imagine the effort it took for sick and dying men to be able to care for and keep this little dog alive and safe from harm as many of them would secum to the horrible conditions they were forced to endure. Soochow was not with these men for that glorious momend of their triumphant return to the land of the free and most would never see their little buddy ever again. That little four legged Marine probably gave many of them a reason to survive during their journey through Hell itself but you can be sure they never forgot that brave and tough little dog. By the time a handful of 4th Marine veterans made their pilgrimage to Soochows grave site some 41 years later only a handful of these WW11 heroes remained. No little Sooch was not aboard that troopship as it steamed toward America He was already at what would be his last duty post at Marine Corp Recruit Depot San Diego, California. It didn't take Sooch long to settle into his new life and regain his strength thanks to his new friends at the mess hall. When the presiding mascot at MCRD met his untimely demise under toe wheels of a military vehicle {Sooch could have warned him about that!} he once again resumed his duties of mascot. But make no mistake this dog was no ordinary mascot and the new young recruits had no idea what that funny looking bow-legged dog had been through. It would be April 28, 1948 before Sgt. Soochow, the toughest, bravest most heroic dog in Marine Corp history would take his last breath and pass through another set of gates and resume his place at the head of the coleum as they marched through eternity. The End
