I guess that some people would balk at the idea that a mere dog could be a hero but then they just don't know dogs. The simple truth is that if Soochow had not been many that survived would have been killed. Almost from the time of their arrival the defenders of the island were under constant attack from the Japanese. The primitive radar they had was almost worthless so the enemy planes were on them strafing and bombing with little or no warning. Many Americans were killed before they could reach safety. It didn't take the men of the 4th Marines long to realize that Soochow had a very special talent. They would swear that Sooch could hear the enemy planes takingoff from their base 75 miles away. It didn't take Soochow long to figure out what a foxhole was for and the Marines knew that when he began to stir and then head for the nearest foxhole it was time for them to do the same. Soochow was so valuable that some Army guys tried to lure Sooch away with the promise of food but he would always return home with a nice fat belly. He knew where he belonged. By the end of March there wasn't much left of Corrigador and then the real bombing began. The nearby island of Bataan was the first to fall and the Japanese were able to bring in their 240MM cannons and opened up on Corrigador firing 400 pound shells by the hundreds. That anything could survive this relentless destruction was nothing short of a miracle but they did. The defenders fought valiantly against overwhelming odds but the end came suddenly on May 6, 1942 The Japanese paid a heavy price for their victory but when the American commander learned that tanks had landed he knew the battle was over and on the morning of the 6th sent the following message to General MacArthur; WITH BROKEN HEART HEAD BOWED IN SADNESS BUT NOT IN SHAME i REPORT THAT TODAY i MUST ARRANGE TERMS FOR THE FORTIFIED ISLANDS OF mANILA bAY...PLEASE SAY TO THE NATION THAT MY TROOPS AND i HAVE ACCOMPLISHED ALL THAT IS HUMANLY POSSIBLE AND THAT WE HAVE UPHELD THE BEST TRADITIONS OF THE uNITED sTATES AND IT'S aRMY.....WITH PROFOUND REGRET AND WITH CONTINUED PRIDE IN MY TROOPS, i GO TO MEET THE jAPANESE COMMANDER.
NEXT, Prison camp in Hell
