A happy story that is not maudlin. Good thing Smich or Zorn columnists did not get a hold of it first. Yay!

What a remarkable cat! And thank goodness his people had put in that chip. I knew a cat that was taken from her back yard, which she never left on her own. Owner saw it happen but was recovering from surgery and couldn't move fast enough to stop the thief or to get the license plate.

When cat didn't return in a few days, family feared that was it. But many weeks later, a very dirty, thin, tired but determined cat came back home -- obviously having been through a terrible time but knowing where to find home in spite of it all.

I love cats. They are sooo amazing. I'm glad they had her chipped. I'm glad they're one big happy family again.

Now maybe they will have learned their lesson and keep their darn cat inside. It's ridiculous that people allow their pets to roam - for what? A reduced lifespan? Really nice.

I agree Sara, we don't let ours wander the 'hood. The neighbors did until I rang their door at 11:30 PM with their cat in hand. Haven't seen him out since!

Cats have a much more meaningful life indoors than they do out.

If you own a black cat, get ready to lose it if you let it outside. There are weirdos who kill black cats -- especially around Hallowe'en.

My mother is a moron. She has lost three cats and never opted for the chip.

If this isn't a reason to microchip a pet, I don't know what is. Especially if you let you cats go outside.

As others have said, this is a great story with a happy ending...but it might not have turned out this way. Sukie and her family are lucky that she survived. I hope they have learned thier lesson and are now keeping her safely indoors.

More meaningfull life??
How do you know? I am sure my cats would like to go out but I live in the city and they would get killed.

Why do people allow their cats to roam outdoors? I love my pet far too much to endanger his life by allowing him to creep outdoors. Those who want to give their cats time outside need to by a cat tunnel cage protector and then allow the animal to sit out in the sun/air protected. These people in NC don't deserve to have that cat returned if they were in the habit of allowing the cat to roam.

I once overheard a "guy" who works as a maintenance worker at a hotel share about how his employer would put poison in the trash to kill the cats from the nearby farms/homes who were let out at night to roam and use the hotel's trash as open all night diners; even sharing what I heard here this still disturbs my spirit.

People keep your precious fur babies in the house.

OK, a little story. I had a friend in Indiana who had a pretty cat show up one day and it was lost. There was no collar, no chip, and after posting "cat found" signs around town no one claimed her. Six months later, she moved to Texas. Six months after that, the cat ran away again, still has not found it two years later. Must be that kind of cat. Anyway, if they ever find it, the Indiana owners will be wondering how the heck the cat got to Texas. The story will probably never be told, and in any case, it is probably rather mundane. Somebody moved and took the cat with them. The cat sure didn't walk all that way. End of story.

Why couldn't the cat simply got on the back of an open-bed truck heading north and gotten off at a neighborhood stop. Would a person really steal a cat in North Carolina and drive with it for 622 miles? Sounds unlikely. But love the cat's name: Here Sukie Sukie Sukie. Here Sukie Sukie Sukie. Sounds like something from an old Luther Campbell song.
