So called Richest Nation in the World and World Leader can not/will not provide Nursing Colleges for American Citizens to attend PAYING THEIR OWN TUTIONS with Student Loans, Veteran College Benefits, Working, Saving, help from their Families and etc.

These Americans will be TURNED AWAY from Nursing Schools due to NO SPACE in American Nursing Colleges.

Since the USA in incapable to of TRAINING young Americans for Professional Positions like Nursing--maybe the every decreasing Middle Class American with the their remaining Finanical Means might consider senting their Children to other MORE ADVANCED COUNTRIES to receive an Education.
Otherwise our Politicians will be happy if they all become WAL-MART GREETERS.

There will be a HUE and CRY from our GREAT WORLD LEADERS in the USA Congress and President for MORE H1-B Visas for Nurses because of a great shortage.

WHY---simple the Hopital CEO's, Mulit-National Stock Holders want CHEAP LABOR at all COST at the expense of Young American Citizen filling the Nurses Profession---the Cost of Nursing Service to the American People WILL NOT BE CHEAPER---the lower wage paid will just make the CEO/Muli-National Stock Holder bottom line greater.

Election year----American are only concerned about Clinton Hips width, Obama Preacher and if McCain can read his lines correctly provided by his handlers.

What will eventually happen is that we will recruit nurses from other countries because they will work for less. It's already happening on a small scale; but as the shortage of nurses continues you will begin to see fewer and fewer American ones.

We are ALREADY recruiting nurses from other countries. Try to keep up with the news.. hardy har har. There was just a recent event where nurses walked out of a home to protest low wages. Now all the nurses are being sued saying they jeopardized patient health.

I was recently in the hospital, getting Chemo. The ENTIRE 3 hours I was there, granted it was a Saturday, one nurse sat and shopped for a purse on the internet, including Amazon and eBay. I was able to watch! 3 hours of sitting. She did get up once, for her lunch break. Having BEEN a nurse, I know for a fact that nurses and nurses aids are some of the single laziest people I have ever met in my life. Having worked with them, I can also tell you that they are some of the biggest gossips, back biters, and thieves you could imagine. I know I'm going to get my head bit off for this one.. I'll get my armor on now!
But, I believe it's true. Also, most doctors I ever worked with have a G-d complex. They're also very used to getting their way...

Nursing used to be a noble profession.. PROFESSION. Now, all nursing schools are pumping out is "BOCES" or "Vocational Tech" students who couldn't make it in high school.. so they ship the kids off to these trade schools. After too many decades of this, we've put out a generation of incompetent nurses. Many are also out of the welfare work program. Welfare subsidizes these trade schools and pays daycare. It used to be only the kids (mostly girls) with the HIGHEST grads could get into vo-tech nursing. Now it's just the opposite. Now they push them though to get them out of highschool and many off of welfare. I KNOW people, I was one of them.

Hospitals need to recruit RN's who have completed 2 years of COLLEGE, NOT tech school, to maintain any kind of standard in the profession. Hospitals do not want to hire these higher educated nurses because, as previously, CORRECTLY stated, it's all about the Almighty Dollar.
VoTech nurses are cheap, no pun intended, and dispensable. Ass. Degree RN's demand more and have higher standards.
Patient care is not the issue for the hospital administration.. unless of course a major lawsuit comes into play.
Well, I've ranted. I'm running for cover now.

As long as medicine continues to be an "industry", we will get lower and lower quality as managed healthcare rakes in more and more profit.

In defense of nurses, most RN's are well-trained and dedicated to their profession. But like any other job, there are those who work hard and those who don't. If you saw nurses loafing when they should have been working you should have documented it and let the hospital know about it.

I work at a medical university that also offers one of the best (and most expensive) nursing schools in the country. I can assure you they don't admit low-lifes. You need to be at the top of your class to get in.

Nursing is still a noble profession, but just as you said, it's all about the almighty dollar, and if medical institutions aren't hiring enough nurses, then they are over-working the ones they have. This may have something to do with the attitudes you've seen. Anyone who works a job where they feel unappreciated is bound to have an attitude.

8 out of 10 nurses a Fillipinos, most of which you can't even understand. I guess their credentials in the Phillipines is enough to become a nurse here; falling along the lines of Affirmative Action.

The Registered Professional Nurse is a well educated individual, must complete college courses as well as pass stringent state board written examination.
Now, with all the time spent to attain a BSN degree, along with taking CRAP from some pompous Foreign Physicians, become rapidly dicouraged and seek other avenues to perform the nursing that they are so well prepared to do.
The 2yr. programs as well as the LPN programs crank out live bodies, ill prepared to deal with the complex tasks that todays professional RN need to deal with, on a pay scale that is also very inadequate.
I am a retired DON, have seen the standards set decline over the years. The foreign nurses barely have command of the English language, yet are hired to fill vacant positions.
This entire picture is so very sad.
I can offer no instant fix solution. As the baby boomers age, more professionals will be needed, are we already too late? I sure pray NOT.

A 2yr. program no way prepares a person for the huge amount of complex tasks that a Professional RN needs to assume. The 2 yr program is s stepping stone. The amount of energy, time tuition, books ect spent on getting the education, can never be recouped by the wages paid. Until society comes to grips that a nurse is a valuable commodity, this country will suffer. The proposed National Health Care plans further denigrate the profession.

So most American Young People are stupid and lazy with low IQ's.

They and their families are content they work in Fast Food Joins, Dollar Stores, low paid Nursing Home attendants, Wal-Mart Greeter, low paid workers in hardware/food Chain Stores.

Therefore it just stand to reason NOT to have College Opening for the ones wanting to be Registered Nurses.

The Same as there HAS BEEN/IS not enough opening in American Medical Schools to train Americans to be Doctors, but FOREGIN STUDENTS ARE WELCOME.

Since most Americans Young People are so dumb, stupid, lazy they CAN NOT learn to be Doctors, Nurses, High Tech Computer Jobs, Engineers, etc then it stand to reason World Leaders USA Congress/President will SAVE US all by INCREASING the number of Foreign Student Trained in our Colleges, INCRESE the Millions of H1-B Visas to bring in MORE Foreign Doctors, Nurses, High Tech Computer Specialist, Engineers and so on.

No problem the American Young People will be happy doing the low paid, un-skill jobs---course the YEARLY EVER INCREASING MILLIONS of Invading Illegal Aliens will help them and their families to be even happier---as Illegal Aliens drive those WAGES TO 5th-6th Country level.

BUT WHATEVER---Maybe an investment in one of those LANGUAGE GAGETS that translate one language to another is in order to be able to communiate with the Doctors and Nurses.

Myself I do not believe young Americans are dumb, stupid, lazy and that there IS NOT Plenty of them to do any PROFESSION, JOB no matter the IQ's, trainable required.

Our so call World Leaders--Congress/President has STACKED THE CARDS against them and they hear this ole BS they can not do it ---until they believe it.

There are MILLIONS of young Americans with VERY HIGH IQ'S working as clerks in chain stores low paying job----with a LITTLE LEADERSHIP, ENCOURAGEMENT, could be trained and perform any of those Jobs.

Just because they are working these jobs does not mean they have LOW IQ's and are NOT TRAINABLE plus most would JUMP AT THE CHANCE TO DO SO----if they KNEW HOW TO GO ABOUT DOING SO, WERE encouraged TO STAY AT---TOLD YES YOU CAN DO IT--DO NOT GIVE-UP

---SADLY in America Millions of American Young People never hear that.

Seems the IN THING to do is have at least dual Citizen Ship in different countries.

Have enough Stock, etc in Multi-National Corporations, own land/ property/homes in two, three more countries on a very large scale or at least enough to live with neccesity in the different countries.

Then not give a crap about any country/people--looks like things are getting out of hand in one---just dig out your OTHER CITIZENSHIP PAPERS and PASS PORT and go to the other country.

The nursing schools pass you if you are young, look good in clinical, and have a movie star smile. Good grades, maturity ( age -54), patient skills/compassion, and intelligence have no bearing on the outcome.

There aren't enough nursing schools to go around. By the time men and women get off a waiting list, they've found other courses of study/employment. This came about around the same time voc tech schools were demeaned. Now everybody goes to a JC then looks for a low paying job commensurate with their lack of education and skills. In the mean time we've become journeyman-poor. Not enough electricians, masons, or roofers--instead we get unlicensed workers who create sub-standard products.

Sorry got off on a bit of a rant...but the premise remains the same. Nursing schools closed down when folks started looking down their noses at this noble profession resulting in our present predicament.

Now the hospitals are just filling their places with people, I mean, mere peasants while not profession. If those people don't have enough knowledge, which is just what is happening right now, all they would do will be gossiping, surfing, and, for a better part, handing some paper and stuff which are the basic work everyone can do.

Well, if that's the case, how do we expect our economy to be improved? United States of America has become the strongest country in the world, and we all know this. But do all of our citizens know how it became the strongest country in the world? Because we discover things, we invent things and we sell what we invent to other countries. The highest technologies we have are what have made us become the strongest country in the world.

What is almighty is not the money, it is what we know and what we make, it is technology.

Wow.. and I didn't get my head bit off.
I didn't mean to bash all trade schools across the board.. but I think most of you understood what I was trying to say.
While some of those who go through the trade vo-tech schools will, thankfully, go on to become productive citizens, many more will not.
Many will go back on welfare, disability, or unemployment as soon as they start pumping out babies, as they won't be able to keep up with the cost of daycare.
I have worked in nursing homes and agencies with too many of these unethical nurses.
There is a reason ELDER ABUSE is on the rise. You only have to look at the employees.
And as for reporting it? Someone mentioned that, obviously you've never worked in health care.
What's one nurses' aid smacking gramma on the wrist as opposed to losing a working BODY out on the floor? Gramma's bruise can be blamed on any number of things, but you can't run a nursing home with out bodies, I mean employees.
It's a sad situation our health care institutions are in. I'd also like to mention we do lose some of our best medical professionals to over seas agencies, non and for-profit.
I think with today's technology the best way we can improve our health care system facilities is with hidden cameras. Sound crazy?
You'd know who was cheating the time cards, i.e. punching 'in' for someone else, monitoring the med rooms and pharmacies, monitoring break rooms, hallways, and even patient rooms at patient of family's request.
Make the trade schools harder to get into. Especially the BOCES high-school level ones. Set up laws for the welfare to walk programs so Mom and Dad can't just quit trade school and assume they can get right back into the welfare system.
The government needs to set up MORE grants to attract students into the medical profession, less student loans to pay back, or NONE at all.
My last rant on this subject. Not all trade school grads are bad. I'd like to think I did alright while I worked. However, I would NEVER encourage my daughter , OR SON, to enter into nursing. While that's sad, it's the truth.

Although I agree with most of what you say, many young people don't bother with education to become engineers for example because even if they did, there would probably be no jobs for them anyway. They they would have to pay outrageous sums for that education from the meager wages they get at fast food service.
