I haven't seen this issue discussed in topix, so I thought I would share the new law. I am very proud of this law. If you know of any sex offenders living with children please report it to the police. It is now a crime. I hope the judges are up to date on this law for custody issues that may arise, or that have been before them in the past.

Gov. Mary Fallin signs Oklahoma sex offender bill

OKLAHOMA CITY Gov. Mary Fallin has signed legislation that bans registered sex offenders from living with minor children.
Fallin signed the measure into law on Tuesday. Its author, Rep. Mike Sanders, says it will help protect Oklahoma children.

Previously, state law didn't prohibit a sex offender from living with a minor child. Sanders says he was surprised to learn that a sex offender was living with a child in his district.

He says it seemed illogical to ban sex offenders from living near schools but allow them to live with a child.

Sanders says he is happy state lawmakers and Fallin supported his efforts to fix the loophole. He says the new law will complement reforms by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services to make the state safer for children.

This is good news for the children in McCurtain County.

how can you inforce a law like that. what will you do with the law that is already in place that state if your crime did not have a child in it. The ok law has already stated that if the person was over 16 you can live with children.
And yes most difinitely your own children need both of their parents in the home. Mrs. Fallin what kind of law is that? Just as stupid as the open carry law it is coming back to bite you in the butt. You can not put all sex offender in the same basket. What is wrong with you?

I absolutely agree with Joe. You can be a registered sex offender if you,at age 18, were found guilty of having sex with your 16 year old girlfriend.
This new law is ridiculous!

The answers to your questions are stated in the amendment to the existing law.

Evidently, you didn't click on the link and read it.

Yes, it against the law to be 18 or 80 and have sex with a 16 year old. What is ridiculous about that? Are you saying it's ok to have sex with minors?

Pearl, all I am saying is that is seems extreme to brand a young man, say 18 years old, for life as a sex offender for having sex with his 16 year old girlfriend.(It's only a two-year difference...and of course it's not the same as an 80-year-old man!) We don't require paroled murderers to be branded for life and stick all kinds of restrictions on them such as where they can live, etc.
I think if there is only a 2-year difference in age and they are teens, punishment should occur, but it shouldn't be so extreme. That is just common sense, it seems to me.

If the 16 year old girl is your daughter, you have the right to expose the fact that she is having sex with an 18 year old man, if you choose. You can have him arrested and rape charges brought against him.

Were it my 16 year old daughter there is no doubt I would have him charged and branded a sex offender. I don't want her to get pregnant, have an std or become bonded with some guy over sex at 16. I don't believe it is harsh at all. When you become 18 you are of age, and should follow the law or be punished as the Judge sees fit for the crime that you commit.

And, paroled murderer's do have the parole office setting strict rules for them to follow, once they are off parole your felony criminal records and strict rules do apply and they do follow you for the rest of your life. Crime don't pay.

Nobody has the right to have sex with a minor, nobody...I'm sure all the mom's and dad's of 16 year old girls will agree that the law is just.

Not all the moms and dads agree with you....I certainly don't. I think you have a rather Victorian attitude toward sex that isn't very realistic in the 21st century..if it ever was!
Do you not realize HALF of sixteen year olds (male and female) have had sex by the time they are sixteen?(and many of those are actively having sex many times a week.) I hope their parents are smart enough to teach them about birth control and avoiding stds. Surely you don't want to fill up the jails with all those teenage boys! I cannot believe you will answer "yes"! For the record, I am 61 years old and have raised teens. I taught my sons to know the law and be aware of the consequences, but back then they could not be labeled a sex offender for life if they were 18 years old having sex with their sixteen year old girlfriend.(by the way, my oldest son WAS dating a sixteen year old girl when he was a senior in high school (age 18) and he eventually married her. They have been married now for 12 years and have 2 beautiful children.

I'm not the one with a Victorian attitude. We have finally got the age raised from age 10 in the Victorian Era to age 16 in the 21st Century.

I agree with the current law to protect minor's from sexual contact with adult's. I am raising Daughter's.

Do you think the age of consent should be lowered? Surely not?

"JOE" not if the person is a convicted sex offender--as the next child he molests may be the one living in the same house the convicted sex offender. That person makes an easy victim.

Yeah... I am a bit miffed about step-parents being allowed to have children they aren't related by blood to be allowed around them. It is like sending sheep to a wolf's den. Oh well, it is a step in the right direction.

To all of you moaning about an 18 year old with a 16 year old, it is called the LAW. You elect officials and if you don't like it, hire one by voting for one that will change it. Until then tell your children to OBEY the LAW!

I must live on another planet.

You are upset because you think there should be a law that keeps step-parents from spending time with their step-children? Are you feeling ok because you might need to check your blood pressure or something. I don't think I've ever heard of anything like that in my entire life. You see, there's this concept called "Blended Family" that has been around for, oh, I don't know... Since before written history maybe?

In Oklahoma, a 16 year old can consent to any and all sexual behavior your imagination can muster, with whomever they choose. If a 55 year old has a 16 year old girlfriend, there isn't anything anyone can say about it. I have read where some people were uncomfortable at an eating establishment because an older guy with a gray beard showed some public displays of affection with his 16 year old wife. They were asked to leave and refused to let her use the bathroom before leaving. The couple hired an attorney and successfully sued the owners for all kinds of charges including harassment, discrimination, and something because the woman was pregnant with twins and was refused access to the bathroom. They now own the same property that once had the eating establishment and bought it with the settlement money.

I'm confused about a lot of society's motivations when it comes to sexuality. I'm also interested in how they come up with some of these strange laws. I mean, does my maturity level suddenly expand to the right proportions on a certain day on a Calendar? How does that work? Does my vagina have universal sexual rights at the age of 16 in one geographical location on the planet, but if I move my body 68 miles to the South, suddenly my vagina doesn't have those same rights? Do I suddenly become immature once I cross the Red River into Texas? And then mature again when I come back to Oklahoma? Why does a government institution have rights over who or what I place into my body, but I don't have the right to photograph myself in the nude at the age of 17? But at the age of 17 I can go into a store and buy hardcore violent and sexual video games legally? Movies? Music? According to the law I am mature enough to handle that but not mature enough to take a picture of my own naked body to look at for my own pleasure?

You people are brain dead robotic zombie shells of ash and you don't even understand your own ignorance of nature.

I think if they are 18 and still in highschool then they shouldn't be charged as a sex offender because when i was in high school most the guys in my graduating class were 19, they are still technically kids, i'm 27 years old, and I think girls should be held accountable to if they are 16 because i know when I was in highschool i was one of the last girls to have sex as far as i could tell and they seemed worse then the guys. I think women want equality but then want to act like the standards arn't the same. Rape is the only time i see a teenager that old being an innocent victim.I think they should make it where They can be no older then three years apart like lets say a 16 year old had sex with a 20 yr. old then that would be illegal. but if he was 19 then no because hes not out of highschool a lot of times.

You people seem incapable of critical thinking skills.

I'm really sorry about that, I truly am. It must feel really, well, I don't know what it feels like. It's been a long time since I thought like people who can't think critically. I really don't remember what it was like. And don't want to.
Good luck raising your children because you're going to be very disappointed according to some of your "standards" you have posted on here. They'll probably never live up to any of it their entire lives. That makes me smile because someone needs to teach you a lesson, might as well be your own offspring throwing your chromosomes right back in your face (not literally of course).

I want TIPSTER, Pearl and some others who commented above, to remember this SEX OFFENDER LAW APPLIES TO FEMALES too. That means if I find out your 18 year old daughter is having sex with my underage SON, I will be happy to send HER to jail and also be branded a lifetime SEX OFFENDER. Thanks, something to think on.
