Secession petitions filed in 20 states

In the wake of last week's presidential election, thousands of Americans have signed petitions seeking permission for their states to peacefully secede from the United States. The petitions were filed on We the People, a government website.

States with citizens filing include Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Oddly, folks from Georgia have filed twice. Even stranger, several of the petitions come from states that went for President Barack Obama.

The petitions are short and to the point. For example, a petition from the Volunteer State reads: "Peacefully grant the State of Tennessee to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government." Of all the petitions, Texas has the most signatures so far, with more than 23,000.

Of course, this is mostly a symbolic gesture. The odds of the American government granting any state permission to go its own way are on par with winning the lottery while getting hit by a meteor while seeing Bigfoot while finding gluten-free pizza that tastes like the real thing.

An article from WKRC quotes a University of Louisville political science professor who explained that these petitions aren't uncommon. Similar petitions were filed following the 2004 and 2008 elections. Still, should the petitions garner 25,000 signatures in a month, they will require an official response from the Obama administration.

The right to petition your government is guaranteed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. We the People provides a new way to petition the Obama Administration to take action on a range of important issues facing our country. We created We the People because we want to hear from you. If a petition gets enough support, White House staff will review it, ensure it's sent to the appropriate policy experts, and issue an official response.

Not everybody who wants to secede is polite enough to write a petition. Peter Morrison, treasurer of the Hardin County (Texas) Republican Party, wrote a post-election newsletter in which he urges the Lone Star State to leave the Union.


"We must contest every single inch of ground and delay the baby-murdering, tax-raising socialists at every opportunity. But in due time, the maggots will have eaten every morsel of flesh off of the rotting corpse of the Republic, and therein lies our opportunity... Why should Vermont and Texas live under the same government? Let each go her own way in peace, sign a free trade agreement among the states and we can avoid this gut-wrenching spectacle every four years."

TECKIE, have you checked out the source yet of who it is that wnts to secede from the union? A bunch of secessionist tried that in TEXAS and even had their own ofrt , but when the state militilia came after them they kinds got killed and thsoe that survived went to jail. This happened not to may years ago. When they would not surrender they kinds went down in a big way---dead and jailed

Did you even read the petition? It's a symbolic gesture to let Obama know that we don't want government to take over everything and that he gets his power from the people not the other way around. It looks like now almost every state has one of these petitions.

we petition the obama administration to:

Peacefully grant the State of Oklahoma to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government.

Teckie, as for goverment, it is yiu and the lot of us together. Now ou had the chance to change presidents and you did not convince the people. that is how change is made. And guess who put most of the debt on us? And the decisionto make that debt was done by choice. Take the 2 warsof Bush --a choice was made to charge that debt on credi. another Choice made by the Republicans and President Bush was the decision to do away with the payas you go bill by not remewing it in 2001. the same paygo bill that Clinton used to balance the budget and leave to the Bush adminsitration a balanced budget and money to start paying off the debt but made 2 tax cts instead. thus putting s further in debt by making the choice to do so. And thsoe choices that were made are still adding up to further debt of 7 trillion dollars. When you take away the revenue you end up further in debt. And remember who said "deficits do not matter" by the Bushies, but in the end it does matter, a whole lot to those paying off he debt.

And Confused, the beginning of the down fall of our economy began in 2006 when the mortgage industry started to crumble not in Dec of 2007. The low interest rates that went to near zero interest decision was made to prop up the banking industry by giving them low interest money. ut it finally met its waterlooo in 2008 and the economy crashed--decisons made by Bsuh to have a none rule , non regulated financial industry and the non use of enforcement or investigation into the crumbling financial world which brought down the world of finance.

In 2007-2008, the liberal media, from the beginning, demonized all but the weakest republican candidate and in so doing caused all but the weakest candidate to lose. As the liberal media had hoped, McCain won the primary. They then started the same tactics on McCain and Obama won the general election. They did the same thing in 2011-12. Republicans had several strong candidates but Romney was their choice because they could use his religion and his wealth, religion within his own party and wealth within the ranks of the irresponsible, gimme crowd. It was an uphill battle for republican candidates. Even a liberal like you should be able to see the bias and viciousness of the media and what it is doing to our country.

Pappy, Pappy, Pappy, Your man has been in charge for 4 years. Why hasn't he corrected all of the mistakes made by Bush and Reagan? Why hasn't he reversed the steep slide into debt and deficit? It has more than doubled under your man. What is going on here?

JUST THINK eCHOHOMS, oKLAHOMA WOULD LOOSE Ft. Sill and the money it brings, the federal road taxes it gets to build roads, The air base in Oklahoma. Plus all that money tha you get in okalhomaas more tax dollars are paid bak to Oklahoma than you folks pay out in federal taxes. The food stamp programs would be gone --Wal Mart would surely miss the profits made off food stamps and hire less people. Headcstart would close down , federal money fro the school system would be gone. And last of all you would not be missed but the federal goverment would be missed. But the state would never succeed from the union. reason--federal dollars would be missed. Thus causing the Oklahoma economy to take a noise dive

Elohims, for you information thsoe people we elect that are suppose to represent all of us are all sock puppets for the corporations and their elite rich--have you not relized that yet. Who do you think writes up all of the loop holes and tax breaks, plus the tax write offs so they pay no taxes. And the laws to hide thier money in offshore bank accounts.
