Clarkson Approves Ambulance Service, Sweden Waits
#1 Dec 29, 2010
Mr. Green is more concerned about himself versus the Village. If the ambulance goes away, so does his "pay for sleep time" at the fire house at tax payers expense. This is all about money, and the mishandling of it by the Village of Brockport since 2000'. Small towns and villages can't afford this any longer.
The cost of maintaining Fire/EMS equipment has skyrocketed, and for small towns to continue to flip the bill for $100.000 ambulances and $240.000 fire trucks is unreasonable.
I appreciate all that our true volunteers do for their communities, but people like Mr. Green get PAID by the village, they are not performing these duties for free, and who can really afford to volunteer a lot of time in this economy. We all have bills to pay, and families to feed also.
Volunteering is even harder when it comes to the EMS end due to the need for NYS mandated continued education.
We are in very troubled financial times and tough decisions are going to have to be made. This is a way of continuing to provide a vital service at no tax payer expense.
I remember years ago when our ambulance and fire departments were 100% volunteer, with 0% paid staff, as we can see, those days are over also. We need to except change, especially when it benefits the masses, not a chosen few.

Off-duty Lauderhill Officers Charged In Melee At Piano Bar
March 7, 1997|By EVELYN LARRUBIA Staff Writer
FORT LAUDERDALE - Two off-duty Lauderhill police officers were arrested during a brawl at a beachfront piano bar early on Thursday morning.
Fort Lauderdale Police say two of the cops attacked arresting officers as they tried to break up the 2:15 a.m. fight.
Lauderhill Patrol Officers Derrin Cohen and Scott O'Brien, both 26 and both rookies, will be suspended without pay while internal affairs investigators review their actions, Police Chief Alberto Melis said.
"If any such thing did take place, I'm appalled by it," said Melis, who has been with Lauderhill police for only two months. "But I have to see the circumstances. There could be circumstances I don't know about."
If the allegations prove true, Melis said, the officers could face dismissal.
Fort Lauderdale police said the fight erupted during an argument between one of the off-duty officers and a waiter about either service or the bill at the Howl at the Moon club in the new Beach Place Plaza, 17 S. Ocean Drive.
The argument soon turned physical and employees, patrons and the other off-duty officers joined the melee, said Detective Clinton Ward, a police spokesman.
A Fort Lauderdale officer who was working a security detail at the beachfront piano bar looked in, saw the fight and ran inside to break it up, Ward said. "They're still trying to get all the details," Ward said. "But by the time he got to it, there were 15 to 20 people involved in an all-out brawl."
Fort Lauderdale Officer Karl Maracotta said in a report that when he tried to pull Cohen from the fight, Cohen refused, saying he was a cop and that his "friend is over there."
Maracotta said Cohen then pushed him to the floor while Christopher Wilcox, 28, a cop in Brockport, N.Y., kicked him in the back. As Maracotta tried to arrest Cohen, he said Cohen tried to kick and punch him.
Cohen and Wilcox were arrested; O'Brien was given a notice to appear in court.
Cohen and O'Brien each were charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Cohen also was charged with battery. Wilcox was charged with battery and disorderly conduct.
O'Brien was treated at the Cleveland Clinic hospital for a minor head injury that occurred during the brawl, Ward said.
No one else was arrested or injured.
Lauderhill police spokeswoman Lucy Crockett said Cohen has worked with the department for a year. O'Brien has been with the department for 10 months.
During that time, Cohen received a written reprimand for "a minor violation" of pursuit policies and two letters of commendation. O'Brien's file was clean.
