Everyone on here who is bashing Sgt Rinella I would like to say . 1st off I've never see Rinella family driving his take home vehicle, I've never seen him drive it off duty. He's doing the job of two supervisors. First he's in charge of radar and overweight vehicle that brings $$ into the village from truck companies that violate the law and ruin our roads. He is also in charge of vehicle Maintenance for about 20 police cars that are driven hard 24/7. That in its self is a full time job. He also manages the uniform allowance for 70 police officers. The man plate is full with a lot of administrative task that can only be handled during business hours. As long as he puts in an 8 hour day and the job is getting done who cares what hours he works. Do you want to come into work at 5-6am. I don't.. He's doing a great job. The cars are fixed right away, the uniform allowance is up to date. Oh and I forgot to tell you his phone rings off the hook for purchase order numbers and officer who want to know how much is left in their allowance. And on top of all that he's called out for major accidents and accident that involve village vehicles. Sure he's getting paid for it ,would you do it for free? If you're going to Criticize the man at least have your facts straight.

Yeah but in old Melrose Park officers not only get day shift they get cars to take home and make their own starting times plus a full time officer handling dog catching duties. Mr Duke does this happen in other towns? Please reply
In most Illinois towns (Chicago included) police officers and supervisors do not get take home cars. Take home cars are usually given to the chief, the deputy chief, investigations boss, and the K9 handler if the dept has a K9 unit.

Take home cars by local towns has been debated for years, the cars would last longer because people would take better care of them. The initial cost would be outrageous. The end result is that most local cops live within a reasonable distance of their job that they just go to the department, do roll call, and go out onto the street.

State police, county sheriffs, and maybe some southern small towns have take home cares because it is just easier for the department to operate. Officers go into service right from their driveways and roll calls are conducted at different locations. Your small towns with one or two cops will have take home cars because let's face it, they are all that it is there and they respond right from their beds if needed.

Ok, so I don't get it? Why is a supervisor starting at 5am? Is there a reason?
Also are there so many call outs for this supervisors that he needs a car to take home? Does he have a large amount of call outs?
It really appears that it just because he knows someone or because he lives next door to the chief or even that he just likes those hours and likes a free car.
I don't want to start more trouble but I along with others just don't understand.
Can we all be a little more courteous to each other too this site was suppose to be about a fallen officers murder.
Thank You

I agreed we should be civil. Why does he take a car home? I don't know. Why does he start at 5 am I don't know and I don't care and I don't see why it matters what time he starts. What is wrong or illegal about starting work at 5 am?.

To most officers Sgt Rinella doesn't need a squad to take home he doesn't get called out very much if at all for accidents. So to most officers it appears to be wrong,(but not illegal) and that Sgt Rinella is getting preferential treatment from the chief. Who we all know is his friend and neighbor. The other two radar officers are also accident investigators so someone else would be on duty or even called out before Sgt Rinella. I don't know the exact mileage but Sgt Rinella can just drive from his home to the station and pick up his assigned squad if called out. It cant take more then five minutes from his home to the PD. Detectives don't even have a assigned squad to take home and they work on much more time sensitive cases. There really is no reason for Sgt Rinella to start at 5am. He is the supervisor of Radar and the other officers start at 8am and 4pm so Sgt Rinella should start at 8am too. Its still straight days which every officer would love to have. This way Sgt Rinella can supervise the 8am officer and assign the 4pm officer. Sgt Rinella doesn't write citations for overweight anymore, he used to and started at 6am. If he still wrote citations then probably nobody would complain about that time. Sgt Rinella does some other administrative duties like uniform allowances, squad repairs and parking tickets. All of these tasks can be done after 8am. If an officer needs uniform or equipment then the perfect time for Sgt Rinella to start would be at 8am-4pm then the midnight shift can see him after their shift and 4pm-12am officer can see him at 3:30pm when they report for duty. This just makes more sense. Auto repair shops don't open at 5am they open at 7-7:30am and the day shift starts at 8am and they are the ones that generally bring the squads for repairs. So these are just some of the reasons that Sgt Rinella is getting flack on this blogg.
