Eat horses? oh no. we eat beef that wendys buys that were dragged thru the sale barn. we eat lamb. we eat goats. we eat deer and all kinda little cute critters. the horses Leroy Baker buys goes to Canada and then Russia, India, China, Japan and many other countrys. He is doing a service for us and we all profit. Pay to bury a horse 250 bucks. the average horse brings now 450 bucks. In kentucky they turn them loose . Check the dog pound that people give up to be killed. Ans i know the farms buying to save them. Give you money you have to starveing people or better. feed them horse meat. its very good and yes most of you have eaten them, Rember the Red pepper steak house. 48 ounce stek they were great and they were horse meat. oh yea. Leroy is one of the biggest dairy farmers in ohio and HE has never rode a horse.

I say we take the horses with bad tempers and mean bite, and use them to catch the catalytic converter thieves.

Let me see. Iff'n I read this right, the nice horsey group would rather kill and bury a horse, as opposed to it bein' killed and used as food for some other country.

BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO!

These comments are interesting today. The advocates of this auction don't mind that the horse meat that ends up on somebody's table is from a sick and dying animal. Ignorance is bliss as you probably think the beef you eat is even healthier.

Connie, THANK YOU for doing this story. Now, will you FINALLY come to a dog auction with me and see the horrors there?

Here we are with a puppy mill bill in the Ohio house and STILL NO ARTICLE OR SUPPORT mentioned in your column or even the ABJ.

Typical of this poster. Reads the first and last sentence, skips the middle, and makes a loaded comment designed to infuriate the activists he hates so much.

And loved his brash boast the other day about how well he is doing. Some folks accept that providence humbly, knowing most are not that fortunate, while others use it as justification to beat down the downtrodden even further.

Great example of an Topix poster.

Being a horse owner I love my horse. Now because of the riseing cost of hay and grain it has been very hard for people to feed and shelter their horses. I have heard MANY horror stories from many of my horsey friends about people letting their horses go and not being able to feed them to sending them to places like Sugar Creek. It breaks a horsey persons heart to be pushed to those limits! I feel for those horses but right now one of the best theraputic riding schools in my area is about to close. Raemelton theraputic riding is about to close it's doors because of the fact that their funding was cut and the cost of hay and grain. So tell me what is more important a few forgotten horses or horses that are continually helping disabled people?

Isn't Sugarcreek Amish territory? Is this how the Amish take care of the horses that do all the farm and transportation work? I always wondered why the buggy horses always appear so nervous and fearful. Now I know. It's apparently due to the treatment they get throughout their lives. I won't be shopping in Amish territory anymore.

yes it is Amish country and no most Amish do not treat their horses this way. Many Amish buy off the track race horses that they get for dirt cheap prices at these acutions.

reading this article made my heart hurt. I feel so bad for these horses, they do not deserve this torture. I am not a vegitarian, but to torture any animal before it is sent for slaughter is just immoral and wrong.

This is so typical of the way we treat non-human animals...exploit them, then discard them. Thank God for Annette Fisher and Lisa Gordon.

As an Amishman, I have farmed with horses and used horses for my personal transportation. This article is a bit ridicules. You city folks polute this earth driving your gas vehicles and now want to come to our community with an agenda to make us look bad! If writing negative stories is what you want, write about your own problems, we'll be ok with our issues! We probably love our horses more then you love your undisciplined children. Judge your own things before you point your finger at us!

You want a wake up call - go to the dog auctions and see the same maltreatment from the puppy mills. Animals starved, beaten, neglected, injured but uncared for. The Amish are NOT the good, Christian people we think they are. Like any group, there are good and bad but once you see one of these auctions and the number of Amish selling the most sickly animals you'll look at them differently.

BTW - if you are so concerned about feeding the poor and starving people of this earth, the best thing you can do is stop eating meat. Do you realize how ineffecient it is to feed all that grain to animals, just for a pound of meat? I don't agree with slaughtering horses any more than I do slaughtering any other animal.

Thank you Connie for this article - it has enlightened a lot of people who didn't know this went on in Sugarcreek. Hopefully this will help fuel the legislation on eliminating the selling and transport of horses to Mexico & Canada and put Leroy out of business. Maybe he will move to Mexico where he belongs and get a job flipping burgers. Let's shut this auction down! But a BIG THANK YOU to Annette and Lisa for rescuing as many horses as you did! You are both wonderful people and I applaud you both for the wonderful passion that you have for rescuing the animals that some people (and I use that word loosely)seem to think don't matter even though they were very loyal and worked very hard to pull them around in their buggies and plow their fields. I no longer have any respect for the Amish and will never shop or spend my money in their stores again.

The Cruelty Inflicted on these horses
Is NOW ten times greater. Since they have to travel 5 times as far to mexico.

Were Instead OF a quick Death. THe bolt gun. Its like a bullet to the brain.

They dont waste money on such things there. THey stab them with knives to Kill them.

THey dont have any government regulations like we do.
I own 5 and was against horse slaughter Before.

But now I see it as the lesser of 2 evils. Of a quick regulated death in the US. Instead of a horrible drawn out death in mexico.

We now have over 100 THOUSAND extra unwanted horses a year. ANd these are not the Cream of the crop folks.

Many are being LEft out in Fields to SLowly Starve when people cant or wont spend money to feed them. Example DIANE SILBAUGH....

I would Rather See them Put down Quick personally.

SO Even though ROY Baker May not be Liked much. I think its better than being starved to death.
