There is a vast difference between treating a condition and medicating the symptoms. Benzodiazepines, the family of drugs such xanax, valium, klonopin and the like, are meant to be used for only a short term when someone has been exposed to a traumatic event. They are not meant to be a maintenance drug that you would take for months, years, or the rest of your life. Taking benzodiazepines for more than just a few months creates a tolerance in which you are no longer getting the desired effect from the original dosage. Therefore, you have to take more to get the same therapeutic effect and basically end up with an addiction. Sudden withdrawal from benzodiazepines can cause seizures and death.

It might be time to consider seeing a cognitive behavioral therapist who can work with you to actually treat the anxiety so that it is manageable without the use of pharmacological agents. Anxiety, like depression, is a very treatable disorder.

Medications work to mask the symptoms, while the underlying cause remains. Consider your check engine light on your car. You can remove the fuse which makes the light come on however, there is something going on with your car that isn't being fixed.

In this area, you are going to be hard pressed to find a doc who is willing to prescribe this class of drug due to its potential for abuse and addiction. You will probably have more success with finding a doc who will prescribe prozac though.

Good luck.

Thanks. I have had several years of CBT with no results. I also suffer from PTSD so medication is a necessity for my daily living.

No, I'm not military but I know a lot of men who are and they suffer from PTSD even worse than mine. It's sad because our counry doesn't seem to want to offer any kind of treatment. If you are a true soldier then thanks for your service to our country. You were brave enough to do things most other people would be afraid of.
