In such hard economic times, it seems the City might be wise to consider redistricting and renovating first. I know Highland View is old and deteriorating and could not students be moved to Van Pelt? Why would a nice school like Washington Lee be left empty? Someone told me it was the handicap accessibility that made it need to be closed; it seems to be it could be removated to make it handicap accessible.
I think a hard look should be taken before closing these schools at the expense of building a new one. I hope the school board and the city counsel will not leap into this without heavy-duty thinking.

Van Pelt has enough students. We do not need over crowding.

This is called "Tax and Spend" and "job justification" by some who are out-of-touch. There is nothing wrong with W&L that can't be remedied by simply making some building modifications. Our community simply cannot afford these proposed changes in these hard economic times. We need better leadership than this!

I agree with your statement. However, I don't know what makes you think Van Pelt can take that many more students.

Well now the rumor is going around that W&L and SWJ schools are going to combine next year, where, the racetrack? Some people attended a meeting at W&L and now some of those people are saying this is going to happen. I thought people were pulling their kids from W&L because of all the problems they are having???? Why mess up SWJ school? Glad I do not have children!!!!

I agree with this statement, W&L was the best school in the area a few years ago, but now the children are suffering due to the lack of leadership. Sad but true!

Van Pelt is the best elementary school around Bristol and it doesn't need any more students to over crowd it and hurt the teaching staff and students at the school. Building a new school seems to be the right answer and if you would attend the public meetings you would learn a whole lot more than you would on this forum.

Washington Lee is so crowded they have had to combine grades. There is no way They can combine 2 schools. They also have wonderful teachers at this school that care deeply for their students. Van Pelt cannot take on more students. A new school is necessary for all. Our children have the right to avoid over crowding. This will also prevent additional stress on teachers which will make them even better teachers. The Bristol Va City Schools have some of the best, caring teachers in the area. Make sure you know what's going on before you make a comment.

Make sure you know how some of the students are being treated before you praise the leadership at W&L. It would be a shame if you built a new school, and allowed someone not qualified to lead the school. We have attended a meeting!

Our children do need a school that is not over crowded. Also, if a new school is established, then have a strong caring staff to be in the school. Gossiping should not be allowed from any of the staff members, but I have heard things from staff members, and I am really shocked. The children need to be in a positive environment, not an environment where people talk about a parent for bouncing a check for a cookie fundraiser. Or a teacher is called a lesbian because she's not married. Change, oh yes.

I would say "SHAME ON YOU" for bouncing a check for school fundraising. That is pathetic!! You have peoples money you collected, why should you bounce a check if you were not using the funds for yourself! PATHETIC!!! I don't care who you are.

Who would be low enough to give their childs school a bad check anyway. And if they did I think the PTA responsible for handling the fundraiser should handle it and not discuss it with anyone.

I agree with the last two comments, the members of the PTA nor a few staff members should have not discussed the cookie funds, but did. Unfortunately this person passed away a year or so ago, and this person is not around to tell their side of the story. My point is, if some adults would stop gossiping, spreading rumors than our schools in this area would improve. We need to think about the children.

Maybe this is why you are called Gossip King & Queens. I do know the school, I have family that work there. Stop spreading rumors!
