On August 28th, 2013 I drove past the clinic on my way to a doctorís office. My three children were in my vehicle, ranging in ages from 2 months to 12 years. My oldest saw your sign that stated ďBabies are murdered hereĒ. He has two baby brothers, reading that upset him significantly. Prior to this, he didnít know anything about abortions. My husband and I are neutral on the issue, we wouldnít personally get an abortion, but we donít believe it is up to us to make that decision for everyone, and we didnít feel our child was old enough or mature enough to need to know what abortion is. Thanks to you, I had to have this conversation with my son in our van, in a parking lot. Thanks to you, I was forced into answering his questions before I Ė his mother- believed he was ready for those answers. After I explained what the procedure is, the inevitable ďWhy?Ē came. He wanted to know why a woman would choose to terminate a pregnancy. So thanks to you and your signs, I had to explain rape and incest to my pre-teen. In a parking lot. My child, who had previously known about appropriate and inappropriate touch, now knows much more than that, much more than I wanted him to know. I had to explain birth defects and medical conditions that would prevent a pregnancy from going to term and I talked about the children that may survive those defects but with terrible disabilities.

And then more questions. He said to me that it seems like any woman that gets an abortion has had a rough time one way or another anyway, and doesnít it just make it worse to see the signs? Doesnít it make it harder on her to deal with an already difficult situation? If those people standing there are Christians, why would they be so mean? I thought God was forgiving and Jesus loved everyone? Doesnít the Bible say it isnít for man to judge?

How would you answer these questions if asked by your own children? What if they asked them in a different context, maybe something you werenít actively protesting? Would your answers be the same?

Thanks to you, my child isnít as innocent now as he was that morning. Thatís been lost, and itís something that he can never get back. Instead of having this conversation at home, with plenty of time for discussion and questions, it was forced on us in our van, on the way to an appointment. Instead of waiting until I thought he was physically and emotionally mature enough for this, I had to talk with him before he was ready. Iím just glad heís not younger. I canít imagine being the mother of a first-grader who just learned to read and having to talk with them about abortion after they used their new skill to read your horrible signs.

I would ask that you consider this next time you stand there with your signs. How would you feel if your own childís innocence was taken from them by someone claiming they are doing the Lordís work?

Sincerely concerned,
Jessica Reynolds

Excellently worded.I have friends who have been accosted by those protesters while they were simply pumping gas at the station near that clinic. Your son is very lucky to have a Mom who would take time to explain the situation rather than brush him off. I am sorry your children had to experience that. I hope you would also consider submitting your letter to the local newspaper, as well. You handled a very difficult situation with class and patience.Good job, Mom !

If someone has the right to abort a child then those people certainly have the right to protest as they please. It just terrible when a child learns that life is not like they make it out to be on tv huh.

Not at all the point you jonesboro blooming idiot. Probably voted for fatass Matthew hill.

We have real family values, unlike those that you "churchitty church" fake asswipes practice.

Your own David Hawk gave a speech on Domestic Violence one week. Got drunk on a Sunday morning, beat up his wife while she was holding a baby and you "churchitty church" family values apes re elected the woman beater.

We just want our kids away from scum like you until we feel they are old enough to be warned and explained about you.

God never wastes His efforts. Those people are there to hassle people instead of help somebody. I hope somebody hits them in the head with a pop bottle at about 80 miles per hour.

i do hope you submit this letter to the newspaper. most of the poeple on topix are just a bunch of moronic idiots..........not all of cousre but for the most part.
EXAMPLE: If someone has the right to abort a child then those people certainly have the right to protest as they please. It just terrible when a child learns that life is not like they make it out to be on tv huh.....POSTED BY JUST SAYEN.

I think your letter would reach more decent and educated people someplace othar than here.

I too am sick of those people and their bull horns and the fact that they bring small children on that busy highway. they claim to care about the children but they need to take care of their own first by not putting them in harms way.

Exceptionally well worded letter. I agree that it should be submitted to the paper.

I drive an Ambulance and often have to go by these people. They hold their signs high when I pass, assuming I agree because I'm in an ambulance.

I blare my horn and turn on my sirens loud as I pass...they believe its in support...it's actually because they annoy me and I'm trying to hurt their ears...

I wonder how many of those self-righteous biggots have a house full of adopted children?? How many are willing to take in the child they "save"?? None of them, I tell you. They don't want to help...they just want to judge.

Christ hated the do-nothing's like the protesters. They should be feeding the hungry or helping the elderly. No. They'd rather do something that doesn't matter. SATANS WORKS.

And yes, they have the kids out by the highway. Very irresponsible . Of they were in Lynchburg they would have something jammed into their vagina, Jerry Falwell style.

Speaking of which. There are now 70,900 names on a petition for Va Tech to cancel playing football against Liberty University. It's a CULT COLLEGE.

I tithe to a place that gives unwed mothers a place to go to have their children in Fargo. But I don't make their choice for them. The Salvation Army home for unwed mothers is run by Satan.

Look. 1/2 of all the people in church don't even believe in Christ. They just want to say they go to church. How sick.....

I'm surprised more people don't heave pop bottles out the windows of their cars at these folks. I guess they use the jpkids as shields. How horrible is that?

Instead of trying to better themselves (have you seen them?) they try to make someone else feel small. That's bad !!!

Original poster here, thank you for the positive responses and support. This letter was sent to the local papers and TV stations as well as posted publicly on my personal Facebook page. I feel these people need to be stopped, that their behavior has gotten out of control and has passed what should be considered a peaceful protest. Infringing on other's rights is not what freedom means.

They definitely have the right to protest. However, would their time not be better spent in other ways? They haven't managed to close the clinic, and abortion are still be performed there on a regular basis. Instead, what they have done is turn public sentiment against them.

Maybe their position would be better served if they did offer to adopt these children. Maybe they could raise money to fund a home for these children if they were to be carried to full term. Or better yet, maybe they could adopt some of the unwanted kids that inhabit our state systems now. Give those kids a chance at a real life, and quit worrying about the ones you cannot save.

great idea. but i don't see it happening. these seem to be the kind of people who just want to be SEEN. they think they are doing something but really all they are doing is putting themselves and their own living children in danger.
and wth were they doing at bb&t bank on west state last week?

Great post. Guess what. I send money to a home for unwed mothers all the way in Fargo North Dakota. Know why? The place in elizabethton doesn't even do anything. Look, these people don't want to actually DO anything. Just yell at other people, like satan would.

the people protesting out there DDONT WANT ABORTION TO STOP AND NEITHER DO PRO LIFE POLITICIANS. It would end their careers. Why don't the protesters get jobs and get off the food stamps... Just has to say it.

Stupid stupid people....... Abortion was legalized by a REPUBLICAN MAJORITY Supreme Court to be used as a vote getter. Both Bushs never made the first move to challenge roe vs wade....you kidding me? They love abortion ..... And you are way to stupid to see that...... You are East Tennessee ignorant. You're Kenny Chesney stupid.

Abortion clinics will go underground even though they are legal,

The protesters beside the highway work under the direction if satan.

My 3 sons,

I wish I could say I can relate, I cannot say that. My young children sit in a church service with us and have heard abortion preached from the pulpit since they were old enough to sit in "big church." That was what five years of age.
Don't blame the protesters for you sharing the information you shared with your son. My child is ten and is aware that abortion is a bad decision. However, is was not necessary for me to go into medical courses of why and how's of abortion.
Just as you have your right to parent and raise your child. They have their right to stand their and fight for the right of the innocent lives of the unborn.
You have no idea the impact those people have on lives. Much less how many minds are changed. Many people going into an abortion clinic sincerely are not aware they stab their baby in the head, suck its brains out, and the remains are sent to use in research and vaccines.
So the next time you want to blow off steam.....
He may look at you one day and thank you for saving your grandchildren life!!!

Everybody wants to say they go to church in this stinking cesspool of corruption. Look at our Godless leader, Ron Ramsey ....... There is no church around here. Their hate club get org ethers and gossip clubs. In these parts, as soon as somebody says they go to church, I hold a little tighter to my wallet.

I agree, it's not my right to force my beliefs on someone else. It's their right to chose what's best for their own individual situation and if they come to regret it later, that's their mistake to live with, but at least it's a mistake they had the freedom to make of their own accord. As bad as abortion may seem, sometimes it's medically necessary to save the mothers life. Imagine this, a single mother with an 8 year old and a second kid on the way, but there's a complication, she needs an abortion in order to live otherwise she'll die and an 8yr old becomes an orphaned kid. Besides that, all these protests are trying to force ALL abortion clinics to close. There aren't even that many left, just a handful per state, some only have ONE for their entire state. When they force abortions into extinction, what then? Wire coat hangers again? Mothers dying from preventable causes due to inviable pregnancies? Did anyone on this board ever hear about this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Savita_... there's MANY other stories just like that from other countries in which abortions are completely illegal. What's more, for people that are "pro-life" they sure are a violent group! I've heard more stories of "pro-life" bigots assaulting and even murdering people that don't agree with them then the other way around. Way to be 'Christ-like'. I'd love to counter-protest, but I don't want one of those psycho's shooting, maiming or otherwise becoming violent with me for voicing my opinion the same way they voice theirs. They just can't handle not being able to control people and force people to accept their crap ideology. What's more, some religions don't believe in organ transplants and blood transfusions. So when those religious organizations go out to the roads, foaming at the mouth and forcing others to accept their ideals and forcing others to accept their religious viewpoint, whether or not they even share the same beliefs, what then? Will they start shutting down doctors offices in which blood transfusions and organ transplants take place? Are we just going to throw out life-saving medical knowledge to appease small groups of people while everyone else suffers needlessly? I'm becoming rather irritated with religion constantly infringing on EVERYONE else's rights, to be quite blunt, take your little knitting circle and BUTT OUT! When you allow religion to interfere with medical treatments, bad things typically follow as a result, such as this: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2013/04/2... When you 'pray for a miracle' or for someone to get better etc., the prayer may not always be answered in the manner in which you want it to. Your prayer may be answered by a doctors medical knowledge.

Here's another one: http://content.time.com/time/nation/article/0...

And I totally agree, all those people out there protesting need to shut their faceholes and start adopting the MILLIONS of foster kids that are already out there. There's plenty of reasons women chose to abort, and it's not up to anyone else to ask why or tell her what choice to make. She knows her situation better than anyone else.

Food for thought: http://www.forbes.com/sites/clareoconnor/2013...

The shutdown is making this more of a reality, but how about the families that can't even afford the kids they've already got because of an unstable economy. You wanna bring new children into THIS kinda world? An already overpopulated world in which there are still LOTS of hunger needs going unfulfilled, and lots of hungry children - even here in the USA.
http://www.nokidhungry.org/problem/hunger-fac...

Do you really want a woman forced to have a kid she doesn't want? To ignore and neglect it or even be unprepared or unable to support it? There's foster care you say? Do you realize how awful foster care is? Some foster kids are only taken in for the checks that come along with them, the kids feel rejected and lack stability never really able to get settled in anywhere, always feeling as though they don't belong. Can you imagine the mental stress that must put on them? Women chose abortion for SEVERAL different reasons, and it's her right to chose, only she knows the reasons why. We have enough children alive and well that our country already can't take care of that are suffering a miserable existence as-is.
