If the citizens of Bristol don't vote off, at the earliest possible opportunity, every one of the puffed up rubber stamps that make up the current council, then they deserve everything they get. Which isn't much. This group would be far better off if their meetings weren't televised. The one in the middle would benefit from a case of lockjaw.

You must be referring to David Schumaker. I did not vote for him last time and I will not vote for him next time. As close as the results were last time, I fully expect him to be unseated next time.

-Herald Courier, 5/23/09:
In the City Council races, Shumaker retained the West District seat by a narrow 90-vote margin, receiving only 721 votes. He won the early voting period over challenger Steve Willinger, 257-211, and narrowly claimed the Election Day vote 437-412. Among absentee voters, Shumaker carried a 27-8 edge.

Unfortunately, it will be another year before any of the losers leave office, and only 2/5 then. The other 3 will screw us and tax us until 2013:

JOEL STATON - AT-LARGE (TERM EXPIRES 2011)
JAMES E. MESSIMER - AT-LARGE (TERM EXPIRES 2011)
FRED TESTA - EAST DISTRICT (TERM EXPIRES 2013)
MARGARET FEIERABEND - SOUTH DISTRICT (TERM EXPIRES 2013)
DAVID SHUMAKER - WEST DISTRICT (TERM EXPIRES 2013)

I agree that this is the most rear-end kissing bunch of a city manager I have ever heard of. I wonder just how much money goes into the city managers pocket so this bunch of goof balls can get together and have a good time at our expense

I am still pissed off that our great council paid over $67,000.00 for that stupid sign on the corner of State St and Vol Pkwy. A complete and total waste of money!

concerned, I'd like answers also. On top of the $67K sign that looks to me like it is not worth $6,700.00 the TN side spent $150,000.00 replacing the lamp posts and street signs on State St and the neighboring streets. Schumaker (specifically), Fiearabend (specifically), and the others need to learn "If it ain't broke don't fix it!"

Who really do you hate? There are 5 Council members? Have you ever ran for office? I believe 4 of the members are truthful honest individuals that are being misled. Why? I have no idea. I NEVER expected them to rubber stamp some of the very ridiculos spending they have, but tell me why pay is frozen? Our prices for food, gas and most importantly utilities have not.

I'm very dissapointed in them all. They seem to be intimidated by the CM for some reason. Have they forgotten that they hired him and he reports to them. He sure seems to have. They don't seem to know what is going on until it's already done. Then they all vote together so as to present a unified front. SHEEP, politically correct SHEEP. That's the Bristol city council. Are they afraid to go on record as being against something or for something if it's not popular. "Beware scribes seeking to wear long robes and love greetings in public places".

David Schumaker is the one I hate. I had the displeasure of witnessing his actions one evening at the Sprint store at Exit 7. He was in there screaming at cussing at the young lady employee. He was "going to cancel his damn service" "sprint could go to hell" "sprint's customer service is fucking ridiculious". He made me truly ashamed to be a citizen of the town which he was appointed to lead. I understand some citizens occasionally become irate concerning a bill but when you are an elected official, and more specifically when it is your year to hold the title of mayor, you must present yourself better than he did. The employee standing before him has nothing to do with his service, all she does is sell mobile phones. David Schumaker is a complete and total disgrace.

repost from Bristol Herald Courier letters to the editor:

Comment was inappropriate, and arrogant

Having read the article describing the proposed partnership between the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance and the Rhythm and Roots Music Festival, my first thought was that such a partnership would be a positive relationship further strengthening our town’s image as the premier birthplace of country and mountain music, a truly American genre.
Then, I read the comments from Bristol Tennessee Vice-Mayor David Shoemaker expressing his apparent disdain by stating that “… this is not going to be good for us [Rhythm & Roots] for the next year or so as we drag their [BCMA] stinking carcasses around.”
His comments as a leading political figure are appalling at the very least as well as arrogant and completely inappropriate.
In these troubled times, we certainly have no need of such comments and attitudes from our elected leaders. Please keep this in mind during the next city council elections.

As was once said, if you continue to do what you've done, you will continue to get what you've got. VOTE, hopefully differently.
