In Memphis, we have lots of different dialects, IE Communications going on. At the cashier level it is mostly smiles, "have a nice day". At the meeting points in street pedestrian crossings, it is NO eye contact, don't look at him/her. At Blogger Pundit levels, it can and often does, degenerate into serious degradation of commentary.
At the family table, it is often only monosylablic. On the cell phone, it can be tedious.
My idea here is to open a dialogue on the kinds of language we hear daily. Yesterday, I was pleased to hear an Austrian accented technical commentary, then a broad Southern Accented pleasant comment. At the resturant it was all, Honey this and Honey that, truly over sweet. TV was bland, no effort to do anything but not offend. Never once, yesterday at least, did I hear an offensive comment.
Memphis, as a city has a rep that is truly terrible. We have a rep as being uneducated, crass, and have no culture worth beans.
I don't agree one bit on this. Just a sampling of the ears yesterday showed me concern, nice attitudes, compentency, and an ability to inform without offending.
However, to add spice to this, the word or comment, "Duh" drives me to the point of true frustration.
