This is yet another reason why the elderly should be retested on a yearly basis in order to keep their license! He was in his 70s. Who comes off a ramp w/out looking to see before merging w/traffic???? He T-boned this biker. Brian never had a chance.

I agree there should be retested and often!! thru out the years of operating a motor vehicle. Mr Hanrahan how did you not hear 3 load motorcycles, how did you not see 7 sets of lights going straight.
Mr. Hanrahan and other like him out there should not be operating period.
I feel very strong towards this seeing you Mr Hanrahan KILLED my husband and ruined our lives, now here on hell on earth.

The trial for Mr. Hanrahan started & ended today. He was a drivers education teacher & yet ignored the rules he taught to our kids. He saw the men on bikes & made the choice to take a left hand turn in front of them causing the death of one firefighter & critical injuries to the other men. Mr. Hanrahan's driving record showed in court that he had several past speeding tickets as well. The judge listened to the sorrowful victim impact statements from Brian Mello's family & friends only to come to the decision that he would receive no jail time, 1500 hrs of community service to be completed while on 3 yrs of probation & 1 yr suspended sentence meaning as long as he stays out of trouble, completes his hrs of community service he'll be fine. Oh & she took his license away for 15 yrs but seeing as he's days away from his 75th b-day he'll most likely be dead before he'll ever have a shot of getting another MA license. All in all, not fair in my opinion & personally I feel his age was the only factor in keeping him out of prison. The firefighters widow requested at the very least a prison sentence of FOUR DAYS, the same amount of days her husband's body lay in the morgue before he was released to her. Her impact statement had the majority of the court in tears as we could all feel the pain pouring from her. I personally feel he should have received more hrs of community service & at the very least the mere 4 days his widow requested as well as loss of his license.

i myself am a drivers education teacher and agree on yearly retesting for senior citizens. once their senses and coordination deminish, whats left? a poor skill set developed at a young age when drivers saftey was overlooked. how many tragedys will occur before this is realized. its not rocket science to figure it out. i wish everyone was retested once a year or every other year so people stay sharp. also the state would make more money and use it to fix the terrible road conditions in many areas.
