I saw this accident last night going SB on 270...He was wrapped in twisted metal. I saw his leg and lower body hanging out of the metal. It was ugly and very tragic. RIP man...
Please, watch out for motorcycles, they have little protection from impact.

I saw it too.
In this particular case, it sounds like there was nothing the automobile driver could have done since running into the back of another vehicle sounds like drivers error on the part of the motorcyclist.
Even cruisers like the Honda Shadow have high rates of acceleration and top speeds that are much higher than what most cars will achieve. When you look at those two factors combined with the fact that only protection you have is a helmet (maybe leathers) and your own abilities, it is pretty clear that motorcycling carries a high risk factor.
I know a lot of riders. I also know a lot of "ex-riders" who lost their interest in motorcycles after surgery and other motorcycle related bad experiences. Sometimes even a high level of motorcycle riding skill provides no protection and obviously your skills are your best protection.

Motorcycles are really fun and thrilling and they are also energy efficient and economical. Using one for transportation on a weekend joy ride is risky. Using one as transportation in rush hour traffic only increases the risk.
It's a tragedy and painful reminder. I've been there and with my many cyclist friends I always fear I will be there again some day.
My heart goes out to the family and friends.

if you are thinking of purchasing a motorcycle please get the proper training and wear the proper safety gear.
make sure you get the M endorsement on your license.
