I think there is a large portion of the story missing. I also think you are trying to sway opinion by throwing around the "combat veteran" thing. Granted most landlords I've dealt with have been scumbags, combat veterans though they have my respect are not absent of fault.

I'm confused as to what exactly you are asking. I am a combat veteran and if you are asking if I should not have to pay my bills, the answer is no. I pay my gas bill every month and all other bills. I'm not sure what a gas bill has to do with rent and eviction? Anyone can choose to not have gas and use only electric, I would like some more information.

I think he/she means a furnace repair bill.

How is the tenant at fault? He was renting a house. The heater/furnace went out and the landlord wanted the tenant who is a unemployed disabled combat veteran to pay the bill for the furnace to be repaired or be evicted if he didn't pay.(Over $600) Now isn't there a law that the owner is responsible for things like that in the home they own? How is that the tenants fault regardless of veteran then?

I say eviction is not easy, and can be a lengthy process. In WV renters have rights and the law favors the renter over the landlord. With that being said, I think it's a deplorable situation for any landlord to pass on his ill taken care of property onto a renter, but onto a 100% disabled veteran?? well I'm sure there is a special place where slumlords go...He should contact the VA for services, they even provide free legal services right now. God Bless him and I would love to know the name of the man that would put a disabled veteran out on the street.

I never meant to intend the tenant was at fault, I was just saying that being a combat vet doesn't mean he is automatically in the right. The original information provided was vague. Did the furnace break due to some thing the tenant did? I'm not up on rental laws, but I would say that unless there is a special clause in the lease the landlord is in the wrong. Have the vet see a HC magistrate or a lawyer, I'm sure they can help him.

Too late..it was old wear and tear the repairman said..and the tenant was taken to magistrate court over it already, the landlord unfortunately knew most of mags there and tenant lost case..appealed and lost to a 2nd magistrate and by then landlord was processing eviction then because tenant still didn't pay bill yet..

Just asking all this to get others opinions..I am giving out all correct info..not withholding anything without revealing too much because owner is very well known in Harrison...owns several businesses..don't want to be accused of slander..
